Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

And yet Poch never gets linked to Barcelona....

Listen, I'm not saying Poch needs to say anything. He could say something and then leave anyway. He could decide to stay and be committal in his comments throughout the season.

But I find some of the mental gymnastics a bit weird, seeing as it would be very easy to shut down the questions himself by repeating his previous comments. Do you want to manage Man Utd? I want to build a legacy here and stay 15-20 years if I'm allowed.

Pretty simple and a tad sight more concrete than I'm focused on Spurs right now.

I don't expect Poch to say anything, I don't blame him regardless of what decision he makes this summer but I just find it a bit strange that people think his comments couldn't be a bit more concrete or that the media response would be the same for someone saying 'I want to be here for 15-20 years' and 'I'm focused on here right now'.

Either way, great stuff vs Bournemouth and let's hope we pick up another 6 points from the next 2. Chugging along very nicely currently,

Im not doing mental gymnastics. I havent convinced myself he will stay. When this broke last week I said I could make a good argument for him to stay and another for him to go, its a 50/50 thing for me. The mental gymnastics, for me, comes in those who convince themselves Utd wouldnt be a good fit for him. I think its a better fit than Madrid.

My point was simply - whatever he says the press will twist it. So why give them the oxygen?

Im happy nobody has said a word on it, while our team has gone from "good but no where near City and Liverpool" to "Well you have to consider them title challengers". (more press BS, of course)

Seem to recall he did precisely that at the start of the summer window a couple of seasons back when there was similar speculation he was off to United. He stated categorically that he would still be here at start of the new season, also that he wanted to be here for fifteen years, but did it stop the speculation?

Did it hell!

Manchester United will consider Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri in their search for a new permanent manager. (ESPN)

Allegri, 51, is keen on the job and has been taking English lessons over the past year with the view to working in the Premier League one day. (The Times)

Honestly if United are the big club everyone claims to be, with unlimited draw and money, this is the type of names that should be on top the list (As much as I respect Poch).

Ive mixed feelings on things like this. I dont just accept Utd = Big Club = must have Big Name manager.

I actually think in many ways someone like Poch is PERFECT for them, and it would be a very smart move on their part.

I'd be very surprised if Poch isn't top of their list - he's the closest they'll get to someone who can emulate Fergusson.

I just think (hope) atm he will believe he can do that here so there's no need to move on

I think it would go against his nature to leave before he's achieved what he has in his mind for us, unless he felt the rug had been pulled (eg the way it all went west at SCBC). For that reason, I'm inclined to agree with Steff's assessment that he won't be looking to go anywhere until he's had a real go at achieving his ambitions here, unless Levy somehow sours their relationship. That means before we've had a real tilt at the title and/or something approaching a CL final, IMO. Human relationships are obviously very important to him alongside the footballing ambition, but even leaving that aside, I believe he's on a mission.

I agree. They should hire someone who has won a trophy, not Poch, who has not won a trophy and you are only a real and proper success if you’be won a trophy, which Poch has not done as Poch has now won a trophy.

Mauricio Pochettino should forget about his loyalty to Tottenham if Manchester United offer him the manager's job, says Neil Warnock.

The Tottenham boss is believed to be the front-runner for the permanent role at Old Trafford, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer currently in interim charge, but Pochettino has played down any links to United since Jose Mourinho's sacking.

Tottenham have climbed to second in the Premier League table, just six points behind leaders Liverpool and 13 clear of United in sixth

Despite the gap between Tottenham and United, Warnock believes any approach for Pochettino would "test" the Spurs boss, but warns that "the grass is not always greener".

Speaking ahead of Cardiff's New Year's Day game against Tottenham, Warnock told Sky Sports News: "You do feel guilty, loyalty-wise. You feel that you don't want to let anybody down.

"But, I remember when I got promotion with Notts County, Chelsea offered me a job and I thought a lot about it, turned it down and got the sack six months later. So when people talk about loyalty, I think that is a load of bull.

"You have got to do what is right for you. There is a good time to leave a club and you have got to decide if that is the right time. Not just Pochettino, but any manager."

Asked if any manager would be able to resist the lure of Old Trafford, Warnock said: "Absolutely. The grass is not always greener. Sir Alex [Ferguson] knew when he left that the place was not the same. They'd lost a lot and no one has been able to put that back.

"It is still a big test for him [Pochettino]. Does he want that sort of challenge when he has got a new stadium and a squad he knows inside out?

"But Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and you don't get that opportunity very often."

Pochettino is yet to win a trophy with Tottenham, but has been widely lauded for his team's style and consistency, and Warnock believes the Argentinian is almost the complete manager.

"He just gets the best out of players," Warnock said. "People talk about him not winning anything and when he finishes his career people will look back on that so it is important they do win something.

"But a good manager improves players and that is what he has done. They have got to get a little bit more ruthless against the top teams in the cups and in the league, but that is all that is missing."

The first sentence of that article isn’t what Warnock says at all. Just more media BS because they can get naff all out of our club....

And that first sentence is the headline they went with!

Utter utter clams.

Sky (or Sly) play this card more than most and all too frequently.

The same crap they pull over on Sly News when they want to tarnish someone or something they have an agenda against.

Pathetic and what makes me most angry is they look down on us the plebs and think we're too dumb to see it.

The bloody cheek of it!

Sly for Sky should be the next autocorrect on this site!

Fair enough mate. As it is, I think the club's line on shutting down any questions about it in press conferences, after allowing Poch to answer in the first one, is the right line to take regardless.

And if they carry on asking, I wouldn't be averse to a Fergie style banning too.

Agreed. They've already tried perhaps the biggest name manager out there, who failed miserably. They've tried someone who has won all of the biggest trophies, albeit not as recently as Mourinho. Both ultimately failed.

I think they realise they need to go in a different direction now, which is why Poch is probably top of their list. If I was a Man Utd fan, I'd want Poch...or I'd be looking to emulate the Guardiola/Zidane route with one of the Man Utd legends.

Fair enough mate, not exactly how I remember it but I don't necessarily always recall this stuff all that well so will take your word for it.

I just hope we don’t do a Southampton. Potentially we could face losing Poch, Toby and Eriksen in the summer. Southampton were a solid top 8 team imo until Poch left and a number of their core players were allowed to leave, now look at them.

There is a non zero chance one of them leaves this summer (in fact, I'd reckon its pretty high). There is even a non zero chance that 2 or 3 of them leave. If all 3 leave (which I don't see happening) but I don't see it as a Southampton situation tbh.

Long term, we'll be on a much more steady footing. It would be difficult to replace Alderweireld, even more so to replace Eriksen and even more so to replace Poch but, because of the great work Poch has done (and the long term work Levy is putting in), we'd be in a much better position to do so than when we first hired Poch.
