Match ratings vs Cheslki

Easy with hindsight but I wish AVBs subs were Sandro for Paulinho, Lamela for Townsend, Holtby for Eriksen

Sorry mate but i think this is why spurs will never be a title challenging team in the very near future. You have to have a winning mentality, anything else but a win should be a bad result ESPECIALLY at home. It doesn't matter who the opponent is, if you want to be big you have to think big. Steaua coaches/fans always want a win it, always demand a win and anything else is a bad result. I know that we only play Romanian sides, which are a lot easier to beat that premier leagues sides but the mentality is the correct one, if you have that half of the job is done. Going to play Chelsea on Tuesday and we want to win and any other result won't be a good one. I know Chelsea is the huge favorite for this one but we beat them in Bucharest last year and we want to do it again. PS: sorry to bore you with Steaua stories, just trying to make a point...

blind faith is not enough to beat chealsea! they still have very good players e.g. mata just to name one, and we still have weaknesses at the back e.g. naughton and defending at set pieces.

i want spurs to challenge for the title but this season is just too near; optimism dosed with realism is my way of appreciating the slow and steady progress of levy, AVB and co. In any case I don't think that even if all of us here think that we can beat chelsea everytime, it would change the result! Maybe its a cultural thing but that kind of football voodoo (pigs head, lamb slaughtering on the pitch) just doesn't work in England!

I think you are a little bit off track with that. There are many spurs fans who think spurs will be title contenders this year, there even is a thread about that so it's not about something "magical" happening. The main objective looks like breaking into the top 4, that is the clubs view. In order to break into the top 4, one should beat from time to time at least, the teams inside that top 4. You just can't expect to bring little points from those battles and hope you beat the little teams to compensate...

Which is funnily enough how SAf did it with manyoo, but he wouldn't want a collapse like they had v Emirates Marketing Project. Drawing at home was ok, but you could see where we are short, part of it is mentality - I started thinking, who is our leader ? Dawson ? hmmm ...

I thought Paulinho was very good in the first half - but seemed to fade badly in the second.

Yep I said that in the match thread (that he was 'flagging') and that Sandro should come on - and I was questioned [-( (yep, I want a medal)

sure. I'm with AVB on being realistic and keeping expectations in check. http://bcove.me/y6y2mw13
OF COURSE I'll be over the moon to win the title this season - but I just don't think it will happen.

as you say its all about breaking into the top 4. its a bonus to beat the likes of chelsea at home, but what's more important for me is to beat every other team that was below us end of last season BOTH home and away. to me that's the real sign of progress. The maximum from beating whichever 4 teams is still just 24 points, compared to 90 for the remaining matches and teams.

i'm really OK to draw with Chelsea, but I get mad when with we draw with pool or everton away...if we're going to succeed in Europe and eventually win that damned european cup, we'd better learn to beat lesser teams away from home.

**** me why is walker getting 6 and 7s? He was awful! He couldn't cross, he lost terry for the goal which was pretty important!

He kept giving the ball away and nearly cost us a goal in the first half. Lucky game he had.

Can you explain the one dimensional part to me? As for today, our two best opportunities(other than the goal) came through Townsend, his jinking run and pass through to Soldado who flashed the ball across the box to Paulinho which was cleared and another piece of great play when he came inside and put the ball through to Paulinho who hit the post. He only had one misplaced pass all game, thought it was a very measured and assured performance from him, was surprised he was taken off and Chadli added absolutely nothing.

Yeah sure, id didn't say he couldn't be effective, or didn't create opportunities, just he's one dimensional. He's very direct, runs them and offers nothing else, no moments of creativity most of our other attacking players can do. He'll either weave and make the pass or shoot, or he'll go wide, with him being on the right, he 95% will never cross and always traps and comes back. He has NOTHING more to his game. He can't hold it up on the wing and do something different. He's either very direct, or very functional.

He's great against weak opposition, and he'd be decent as an impact sub, but nowhere near good enough for the first team. Yet.

None of the defence to blame they were playing to a line -remember Dawson was pilloried vs L' **** for breaking the line. Dembele was at fault for playing everyone onside.

I think AVB disagrees. I do too. I think the ability to drive at another team, commit them to challenges and beat a man is a vital weapon to keep in the team. It maybe one-dimensional but it works! Just ask Ashley Cole he got an absolute roasting yesterday!

The Special Cnut not special this season. Had he played Mata from the start Chavs probably would have won. Yet he will be lauded as a magician because he changed it second half. Di matteo and Benitez did better than him against us last season.

Whats wrong with direct players? The Chelsea defenders struggled with him running at them yesterday, are they weak opposition?

He's young and seems to have the enthusiasm to improve himself.

One dimensional? He's proved prior to yesterday to have a decent shot on him and yesterday he proved that he could handle the creative side of things as well. That's at least two dimensions in my book.

Cole is a key player (best LB in the world according to some) but hardly noticed him in attack yesterday and Andros was beating him for fun.

im guessing you never watched the game. we got battered for 75 minutes. if youre not familiar with who Tottenham are, we are a team that have NEVER finished higher than fourth in over 20 years or won a major trophy in that time period. A draw at home to one of the best clubs in the world after the performance is a good result.

if you can get points like that against the top sides but contineu to beat the poorer ones like we have, we have every right to fight for the title.

Wait, what?

Not sure how you can fault AVB's substitutions. He wanted to win this match so brought on 3 attacking players in Chadli, Holtby and Defoe. Bringing on Sandro would have been too negative and defensive. Paulinho had 2 goals in 2 matches, so don't think it would have been right to replace him with Sandro who rarely scores. Holtby had 3 assists and Defoe scored 2 goals against Villa, so it would have been unfair not to play them. Would have preferred Lamela for Chadli but not sure Lamela is ready for a game like this where we were being outplayed.

Look at the chances. I think 1-1 was fair overall. But we had better chances. Paulinho should have scored and Ivanovic done very well to divert it over the bar when it was fired across goal. They had that Shurrle chance and Torres one where Lloris done very well. Defoe should have scored or done better and Siggy came very close. I think 1-1 was fair
