Lucas Bergvall

Who was asking the other day for a new Dembele?

That might have been me given that I posted about Dembele and saying that he’s my favourite ever Spurs player. I just love when players have that power and dribbling ability to keep the ball close and breeze past opponents. I can’t see Bergvall being a new Dembele but Bergvall has impressed a lot within the last few months. Now he’s a first team player, and can only see him getting better as he grows with experience and becomes wiser of mind and ability.

Agreed, he has all the skill and talent to dribble and beat players and make passes, he plays with his head up, he also has an outstanding tackle/interception ability, very sturdy too for a teen. He can be anything, he is absolutely fantastic.

Probably his one minor "downside" is chasing around a bit too much (!) as he is absolutely everywhere which sounds good but most great midfielders know to stay in a certain 'box' within the pitch and keep ticking over, don't crowd others. At one point Son and Udogie tried to combine down the left and Bergvall came over to help. Son told Lucas afterwards to stay away and not drag more players towards them.

Probably as he matures he can stay in his own 'box' and control the game and try to make Spurs less vulnerable i.e. when the midfield is entirely vacated with 7 players in front of the ball.

Think this is spot on. Have pointed towards his positioning and awareness as the main shortcomings before as well. Only to be expected from a player that young in his first season of course (to be fair even more shortcomings should be "expected").

Such a well rounded player perhaps difficult to point at a standout quality. To add to your points his ability to create and exploit space through timing and awareness (on the ball) seems really good. For sure he can beat players with skill, but that ability to beat players even without using technical "skills", moving into the right space, change of tempo. That one clip going around is mostly that. No individual touch that's particularly impressive as a skill, but always moving with purpose and in the direction and at a tempo that makes him glide past players. Love that.

I'm sensing that Bergval is already ahead of Bissouma and Sarr in Ange's mind. Is the manager perhaps trying to invest in the Bents/Berg partnership in this phase of the season so their understanding is strong for the business end of the season? Then perhaps Gray comes into the equation more next season.

Lots of talent and confidence on the ball. Needs to learn to sometimes take the easy option and still has a hell of a lot to learn in terms of his positioning when we are out of possession (gets caught wrong side of his man very often).

Loads of talent to work with though and I think he will become a star.

You're a bit harsher on his weaknesses than I see it, but fully agree that those are the weaknesses that stand out. Less so the choosing the easy option, more so the positioning.

Good weaknesses for a clearly hard working 18 year old to have. Even just more experience playing this kind of football at this level will probably help with those.

On the ball he has so so much. fudging hell kind of much.

Excellent player. Has come on massively since the start of the season. Lots to learn still but looks like he will become a mainstay.
