Knee jerk thread,

You really think so? We've played some weak teams and been made to look very ordinary too often. Today was another example. We were outplayed by QPR, Norwich and Reading. I don't really think we've played at all well yet.

our points tally is roughly what it should be, as fans we tend to be overly critical when we play poorly but today, for example, we deserved the 3 points overall, despite a poor second half we done more than enough in the first and Southampton didn't create nearly enough to deserve an equalizer. Chelsea and Saudi Sportswashing Machine i feel we deserved a point in each but could have easily deserved only 1 against United. wins against Villa and Reading were fully deserved and the remaining draws were more or less fair.

we might not be playing the free flowing football we have become used to the past seasons under Redknapp, but that does not mean our points are any less deserved. also playing badly for a period in a game does not mean we deserve to lose either, the other team needs to go out and do their part to take advantage - we may have played badly in spells but we have rode it out to get the points we deserve, mostly

That is where you and I will fundamentally disagree then. I'm a great believer in that over a longer period performances will marry up to results, but in the short term you can play well and lose and play poorly and win for a few games.

How can you disagree with my point that the ONLY way to win is by scoring more than the opposition?

Performances NEVER marry up to results you see that week in week out in every level of football. How many times has a team outplayed their opponent, had 70% of possession more shots on goal and lost 1-0, too many to count. The only thing that counts is goals scored and conceded, whilst we score more than our opponent I'm happy. A win is a win.

I've seen Spurs outplay Arsenal at the Lane and beat them, when we had been dominated for much of the game. We outplayed them because for all their possession and shots from distance, they didn't really threaten where every forward attack we did.

As one of your least favourite players would say .... LOL

They had two shots on goal the entire game, with one of those being in the 91st minute. Just give it up TMK, it's incredibly droll.

no one is really saying that though are they?

i find that the is a group of fans who like to have a pop at other fans who are in anyway critical, as if that makes them a better fan. Todays match i thought especailly second half was bad and that AVB did a number of things wrong like he has in a lot of games this season.

Great,
I personally get sick of reading slagging after slagging, how many things are wrong right now, how brick we are...if it was discussion, great, but let's be honest, some people have an idea of a player/situation in their head and said-target could brick rainbows with pots of gold everywhere and nothing would change.

I agree with the second part of your comments. There is a difference between scrutinising and plain stupidity. A difference between Constructive criticism and well.. un-constructive criticism. Some times we let our emotions get in the way (im guilty of that) but for the best part most are criticisng the performance and I see a trend of the 45 minute performances and difference between the home and away performances. Im not criticisng AVB but he needs to do something to sort it out because our luck runs out soon and we will find ourselves losing games from winning situations.

A very fair post mate. I am certainly emotional myself, so my hand is in the air there with yours.
I think it is very interesting how much better our luck has been this season; and I don't disagree, we are going to get some bad luck here and we need to be playing at least a little more consistently. I do hope we get a fully fit squad soon, but there again, no-one has one.
Again, agree with you mate.

Exactly and i think he should now only play as a right back he did well there in the cup i seem to remember last year, but in midfield he gives the ball away to easily and that puts us under pressure and it is usually when the other team are trying to get back into the game. Why avb can not see this i do not know.

But of course unless you blindly follow the leader then your a fool who does not know football. Doess not mean your a turncoat if you try and evaluate the guy and his actions, seems the most obvious thing in the world to me. I guess we have a lot of religious people on the board today who just want to blindly follow the party line.

AVB gets to the end of the season but i have got to say again the aare some red lights flashing and i will be interested to see if we have the same problems as a team in May.

No problems with saying well done to the fella if we are playing well by then, why would i? anything that is good for tottenham is good for me. But i now have reservation about the guy and i was a blank canvas when he came in.

Thing is though, look at his options given who's fit.
Of course AVB has some question marks, he's an odd man with OCD who is apparently obsessed with U2, so right there we should ask questions, and questions are fine, but people dog piling Defoe every week because he is not Ade (thank fudge he isn't, if he was, we'd have two strikers throwing strops left and right) don't get a free pass.

The real truth is, you play brick and win that is how champions win the league, by winning games they shouldn't win. And then when in form absolutely taking advantage of the purple patches.

Thiiiiiiis.

Once the injured players get back and our squad starts to get its depth back we can seriously kick on and stop these scrappy wins.... Hopefully.

The real question ultimately is: are we in a false position?

Yes, along with every other team in the Premiership. I would actually say that until every team has played each other home and away it's impossible to say what a team's "real" position is. For example if the fixture computer went nuts and your sides first 19 games were at home then I'd expect that team to accrue a lot more points than they would in the second half of the season. But that wouldn't mean the first half of the season they were doing well, and they collapsed in the second half. They just had harder matches to contend with.

We've played Saudi Sportswashing Machine and Utd away which were undoubtedly our hardest fixtures to date and came away with 3pts from them which is excellent. But overall our fixtures have been very kind:

Home
WBA
Norwich
QPR
Villa
Chelsea

I'd expect 13 to 15pts from that little lot. We got 8, which is very poor. WBA are exceeding expectations, but are still a mid-table team. Norwich, QPR and Villa are all in the relegation mix. Chelsea are the best team in the country, but London derby at home I'd expect a draw at the very least. To ship 4 goals at home to them was terrible.

Away

Saudi Sportswashing Machine
Reading
Man Utd
Southampton

Two hard games, two easier matches against two teams I expect to go down. I'd personally say 6pts is what we should be looking for here, and we actually got 9pts. So we're 3pts to the good away from home, 5 to 7pts to the bad at home. So depending on how you look at it we're either 2pts or 4pts down on where we currently should be. Doesn't sound much but if that trend continued over the season we'd finish somewhere between 8pts to 16pts adrift of where we should be. Which is a lot.

I think November is going to be a good acid test for us. 3 home games, 2 away games. The 3 home games we should win comfortably, but we aren't really expected to get anything from those away games so if we pick up a couple of extra points there than we're meant to then we're right bang on where we should be. Of course that would mean not dropping any home points.

I think that's a myth. Champions normally have a couple of games a season like that. It doesn't happen every week!

We will hit top form, and then we will be winning games we deserve to win

I hope your right, but I have to admit I look at the quality of players we have and I can't see it this year. But if we can keep in touch until January and make some astute purchases in the transfer market then we certainly could nick 4th place come the end of the season. Arsenal certainly don't look like any great shakes at the moment either.

with everyone fit i think we have a team worthy of 4th, but as with last season it will require one of our direct competitors not having a great seasons themselves.

To get 4th you have to be aiming to win it, if you aim for 4th it is not enough. I'm not saying we are going to win the league, but putting together a challenge and to be in touching distance for a long period of the season is key to securing 4th. The spirit in the dressing room needs to be that of 'we can win the league'.

lambert did a great job with norwich getting them up the leagues and in the premership, he tried to play good footballer but also knew when he had to be defensive. Good manager who deserves a shot at a good club.
Sorry Chich, he is at a good club. Villa have much superior revenue to the majority of other Prem clubs and have a very good squad by bottom half standards, yet he has them on 6 points... Yet you'd prefer him over AVB? 6 points from 9 games suggests to me that Lambert isn't learning from his own mistakes.

Personally I think our football is an eye sore at the moment and AVB has a lot to put right, but some of your assertions are as bad as ones previously levelled at Redknapp. How are you going to blame AVB for not signing a striker when we had clear targets but Levy fudged about AGAIN and lost again, for example?

Villa have an atrocious squad, but that's nothing to do with Lambert. He should be able to keep them up though and next season we'll see what he's about.
