Jose Mourinho - SACKED

I’m not even sure we have a good first x1 any more. As a barometer would any top 6 club want anyone from our back four, Winks or Sissoko? Or even Moura?

We're a budget club. Our stadium is big club mentality, our transfer dealings are not. That's not by accident, that's by design.

Arsenal went and bought one of the best strikers in Europe in Aubameyang.

Emirates Marketing Project went and bought one of the best midfielders in Europe in Mahrez.

Liverpool went and bought one of the best defenders in the league in VVD.

Chelsea went and bought one of the best attacking players in Europe in Werner.

Man Utd went and bought one of the best midfielders in Europe in Pogba (or Fernandes).

Under Levy, have we ever made a statement signing like this? One of the best in their positions on the continent? widely sought after?

No. We get Clinton N'jie. Kevin N'Koudou.

We let go of Michele Vorm then re-signed him again. banter club.

Edit: Why does GG change the word m e n t a l i t y to meteorology?

We thought we brought someone in NDombele that fitted your bill

And VVD was still a huge gamble on the basis of where he had played previous so hadn’t played at the highest level

I was talking about the quality of what we have in terms of what Jose has to work with.

I don’t disagree though, I have a mate who I (used to) go with who is always asking for a ‘statement’ signing. Sometimes I argue that it as important as a ‘good’ signing but I think Klinsmann or to a lesser extent Davids was the last time I felt we’d signed a superstar, albeit in their twilight years. I’m a little ashamed to admit that I was excited at the prospect of Dybala, partly because he was a player my 7 year old recognised as a FIFA cover star!
However Modric, Berbs, Bale, Eriksen, Alli, Son prove it doesn’t have to be a ‘name’ to be a good signing.
Ndombele was a statement signing, but the statement seems to be that we are just not very good when it comes to breaking our transfer record! I understand our constraints due to our wage budget, then financing the stadium but since we established what now seems to be a golden era of a first x1, assembled for a relatively low cost, we have struggled to replace the players with similar quality even when spending bigger (Sissoko, Sanchez, Aurier, Janssen, Moura, Ndombele, Sessegnon represent a huge investment and nine of them would displace our peak X1 under Poch. Obviously 2 of them need more time but Lo Celso looks like the only decent business we’ve done in recent times.
Clinton and Kevin, maybe even Moura and Gedson make me wonder what the manager actually asked for - I can only assume it was ‘someone who runs fast, ideally one footed with little control over what is going to happen next, with limited physical structure and only played in weak European leagues. Or we just filter on pace 85+ in championship manager and sort by price lowest to highest...

Our transfer record breakers iirc:
Armstrong
Sir Les
Rebrov
Sandra Bent
Paulineinho
Soldudo
Lame la
Sissoko
Sanchez
Ndombelly

Agree we do not necessarily need 'big name' signings, but if you're answer is "we don't need big name signings" then how can you defend Levy on making ZERO signings?

We don't make big name signings (1 player in the last decade seems to be the evidence that we somehow do...) and we don't often make signings. When we do, we bring them in at the end of the window after 3/4 games of the season have started, meaning said players have missed the entirety of pre-season with their players. You can get away with that if they're some of the best footballers in world football (like Bruno Fernandes) but we're not doing that.

Anyway, this is a Jose Mourinho thread, i have digressed.

Our squad needs fundamental changes under a manager who has not shown convincingly he's the right person to undertake such a task. We're paying for the sins of poor management at the board level, but nothing has suggested they are willing to change their approach.

Sorry you keep on saying he hasn’t shown convincing...
Shown what? he hasn’t been here that long to show anything but he has in his previous employment
I mean he did change his Chelsea teams to win things
He did that at United and at Inter too

Sorry and mods this post can be moved to another thread but to be clear my position is:

We had austerity enforced by the stadium rebuild.
I think working at 0 net spend over 5 years or so was a supposed trade off for the extra income the stadium would being in the future. We as fans accepted it as it coincided with the best team and manager we’ve had in recent memory. It’s unfortunate that the foundations that had taken so long to get to that level (players and manager) and were in place now require a huge rebuild / investment to return to previous levels, let alone improve upon them. The other impact from this could be the loss of Kane’s commitment, I know some think he is a spent force and we could reinvest the huge fee he’s command, but for me he is almost priceless considering he’s passion for the club itself, the dearth of goalscoring number 9s, let alone superstars who’s fit into our wage structure and our appalling track record of buying strikers.
The investment I as a fan unrealistically expect is whatever the ‘normal’ transfer budget would have been in all those years we didn’t spend, for a club of our size and relative to any other club without a sugar daddy / country to be made available now by refinancing the stadium, but I guess it is now the equity we have in it. It is extremely unfortunate that the stadium forecasted earnings have been reduced due to the pandemic but the decision to operate on a relative shoe string have allowed the ‘product’ that we are all actually invested in (and the high performing version of this brings in more money than the stadium) to deteriorate to a point that it may need a short term bail out to stop it going under. If course this is all tempered by the fact we have been terrible at identifying the areas and quality we need when we have spent, if I was a billionaire and a massive Spurs fan who wanted to donate to the cause I’m not sure I’d trust the current set up (all involved in the transfer committee) to spend 300m on players.
Our new stadium will not be a good place to be if things don’t improve by the time we get back to watching games live either.
So in summary I think some decisions may have been made with good intentions, there has been some bad luck / unforeseen variables but it also feels that there has been some negligence over both the lack of any funds being made available and the investment decisions made on the playing side when they have been (irrespective if self generated or provided)

GLC and N'Dombele were hailed as two of the best midfielders in their respective leagues. Sanchez was the best defender in the Dutch league when we signed him, whilst Foyth was earning great reviews down in South America. I think we've just had some really brick scouting since the Son, Wanyama and Alderweireld deals. We all expected Foyth and Sanchez to be ready by now, but neither have progressed whilst the squad deals like GKN and Janssen were straight up bad.

Whoever is in charge of scouting needs to really pull up some diamonds this summer.

Lets hope so, however most if not all signings are a risk and you only have to look through some big ones over the years which have failed to live up to expectations, not just here but other clubs as well.

I’m not even sure we have a good first x1 any more. As a barometer would any top 6 club want anyone from our back four, Winks or Sissoko? Or even Moura?

The way I see it is:

- We have a few players who would form the basis of a very good team - Lloris, Dier, GLC, Son, Kane, plus a couple others in Dele and Bergwijn who might be able to be added to that group depending on what formation / balance you look for

- We have a longer-list of players who are useful squad players for a team in say 3rd-6th in the league, but not good enough to be first choice regulars: Davies, Winks, Sanchez, Tanganga, Toby, Sissoko, Moura etc. These are all good enough to come into the starting 11 alongside genuinely first choice players, but you cant have a team rammed with these guys if you want to be 3rd-6th in the league. This is our problem at the moment - too many of these are in the team for us to be in the top 4, and struggling to make top 6

So the challenge is:
- adding another 4 players to that first group and creating a team out of them
- getting the right balance of options in that second group and keeping them fresh enough so that the squad doesnt go stale

The problem is that signing 4 first-teamers would usually cost £150m - £200m. Its therefore a multi-window process to fill in the gaps, however if we could add a CM and RB this summer, and potentially start to resolve some of teh squad issues (need a back-up CF, need to work out what to do with Ndombele, are Lamela/Moura now at the age to sell them before value declines?) then that would be decent progress and next season should be better than this year

Pochs methods were working until they stopped working and sadly, it didn't seem like he knew how to get them working again

His methods were based on running players into the ground. Its possibly why, in my view, Dembele was crocked early, Kane is repeatedly getting injured, our dutch CBs look finished was before they should be, etc

I agree with your general point but feel the Ndombele signing was genuinely exciting, sadly not worked out.

Yeh. What a dingdong.

Err sorry - but thats not right!!

Last season we got 71 points
This season we have 48
So thats 119 in total

Therefore at best we're 6th, maybe lower but the screenshot doesnt extend down below Liverpool!!

Liverpool got 97, plus 89 so far this time.... so they should be top

Or am I missing something? Is this from a few years ago?
