I have read and heard comments from Harry after the Everon match that the reason he played Bale on the right was because we have no one else to play there. Now forgive me if his comments have been addressed in another thread but I could not tell from the various thread titles.

Now was it my imagination or did we not play at Anfield recently and did not Niko give an impressive defensive perfromance on the right side of midfield? I remember him doubling up with walker to handle threats down our right flank and generally putting in a very robust performance. I would go so far as to say that I have never seen Niko work so hard in a Spurs match before. So why not simply play him there again and that way we get to play 3 or our 4 first choice midfielders in their strongest positions. Again if Harry's comments have been addressed I apoligise for starting this thread.

You don't move your two best players out of position to cover for others, thay should never of loaned out Andros Townsend he was perfect cover for the injury prone Lennon. Playing Modric wide left is like tinkling in the wind, its not worth it. He must play centre mid all the time, and i'd like to see him get the ball and look forward not sideways and backwards like hes been doing lately.

If Rednapp continues to muck about with formations then forget 4th were be lucky to finish top 6.

We all know he played him on the right cause he thought he couldn't play against Neville.
He moved him over to the right that time Neville had a good game against him after the Inter game when everyone was watching.

One could also consider playing VDV on the right although the problem is that he wanders. but I really thought Niko has shown enough discipline on the right flank to merit another start there

Rafa is not an option on the right, as he doesn't like playing there, and we want our best players in their best positions

Firstly I did not know that and do not believe that is the reason, and secondly that was not the first time thi sseason he has played Bale on the right so I am not sure about your explanation

Firstly VDV was not my first option, heck up to me I would pick Gio on the right or kept Townsend ahead of playing VDV.

And what what was that you mumbled about us wanting our best players in their best position, of course you mean like playing Bale on the right and Modric on the left.

And what do you mean VDV does not like playing on the right? You really think Modric likes playing on the left? Course not, he does it because his manager tells him to

Christiano Ronaldo is big, strong and pacey, so I have no doubt Harry would play him as a centre back...

Rafa has done very well from the right in the past, in games against teams parking the bus he to me seems to almost do better there as he struggles to find place in the centre anyway.

He has also upped his defensive work-rate lately and done a lot of tracking back.

He did say once that he didn't like playing there, but that is some time ago now (1 year+ I think) and he has since played on the right, worked his socks off from the right and done well there. I don't think he minds it as much and with Walker behind him who can bomb up the flank I think it suits him a lot better than when Corluka/Hutton was there. Actually, it might have been while Hutton was there that he said he didn't want to play on the right and it might have been just so he didn't have to be close to Hutton.

I agree Naja. You play your best players in your best positions....Our mini slump has nothing to do with the England manager speculation, far more to do with moving Modric away from the centre. Bale on the right has worked on occassions, but not for a quantifiable amount of time - just during a game when he moves around from the left if becoming isolated.

The annoying thing is we don't even need an out and out winger on the right. With Walker at RB we have someone who offers us pace and width already, so my ideal choice with Lennon out would be Niko. Even if Harry doesn't fancy Niko RM then just ensure we have Bale on the left, Modric in the middle with Parker and with Walker bombing down the right it doesn't have to be such an issue who plays RM.....

Bale doesn't need to track back.

The opposing sides Full Back rarely pushes on leaving Bale free for the counter.

I think we should sign Guti?®rrez as the way he helps the left back out is very very good. He would be ideal for if we need to play Bale on the right.

Does he not play on the way right for wales and modric play very well on the left for us? Leaves 2 solid players in the centre.

Really? Even when we play a 4-4-2?

It's really not that difficult to push a striker or central midfielder out to abuse that space along with the winger, if we need to bring a central midfielder over to cover we're effectively playing a 3 man midfield opening tons of space.

Bale has more freedom than most of our midfielders to be slack tracking back. Partly because of his immense counter attacking abilities, partly because of how solid Ekotto is. Partly because he doesn't feel like it. I think.
