If you want to talk about Kane’s performances in big games and his record in finals then that’s a fair argument. He has an underwhelming record in finals to say the least. But our team regressed over the last 2-3 years. I don’t think that’s even debatable and I fail to see how anyone can’t see that. Kane and Son may not have had their best seasons in terms of their performances but it’s abundantly clear they have carried us this season in terms of goals and assists. Take either of them out of the team and who scored the goals? I like Bergwijn and I hope we can keep him but he seems to have gained this unearned reputation as some game changer and prolific goal scorer because he scored a couple of late goals against Leicester. Not offence to him but he’s just nowhere near the level of Kane and Son. I keep saying it but it’s not Son and Kane’s fault that we don’t win when they don’t play well and the rest of the team aren’t up to the required level we aiming for.

I think most managers got sacked the season after selling them. Berbatov and keane ramos got sacked. Jol got sacked after carrick? Bale avb was sacked. Francis after selling sheringham? Graham after campbell?

The trajectory went down to the extent we had to sack our managers. Then we started to make a recovery and yes improved but not because we sold our best players. With redknapp we even had to buy defoe and keane back. Sheringham bought back. Klinsmann bought back. Bale the majority of the not so magnificent 7 were sold off quickly.

Who were the replacements for that lot?

Sheringham - was it Les Ferdinand?
Campbell - Dean Richards
Carrick - Zokora
Berbatov - Frazier Campbell
Keane - Keane 6 months later
Modric - Dembele
Bale - The Super 7

So how often did we improve on what we sold with the money we got? Not once if the above is accurate.

Dembele is close to be fair but Modric is a generational talent and what he's accomplished subsequently means you can't rally argue for Dembele in that conversation. Eriksen was an outstanding buy amongst the sea of brick of the Super Seven but not as good as Bale was.

There are few players in the world anywhere near the level of Harry Kane. We have no track record of replacing players well when we sell them.

We eventually did improve overall to be fair after selling most of the above but there was weeks or years of pain involved first and more room for improvement. It'll be harder to take us up a level from here.

Selling Kane would also be a nail in the coffin of Conte's time here. He wants to work with top players and needs them to get to the level he's aspiring to. We have 3 (Kane, Son and Hugo). Selling the best one would be insane.

it's not who replaced who, its that we kept improving the squad and the infrastructure, we sold Bale, the most dangerous player in the world at the time, an unstoppable match winner, yet we were one of the best sides in Europe a few years later

Did we need to sell him to do that?

The point of selling Kane has to be that you improve the team with the money you get for him. We have no track record of that. Quite the opposite.

Then the argument becomes, do we sell him knowing we won't sign anyone better so we'll improve in 6 months to 2 years? It's a crazy argument.

Shame that we stinged out with the three window transfer freeze... Recapturing that winning team attitude and spirit is going to cost us more than just maintaining it.

This constant discussion is pointless as the club is not even remotely considering selling Kane to fund a ‘rebuild’.

Funds for players will come from elsewhere and Conte’s entire head would self detonate if Kane left.

Just dont understand why some people have this constant back and forth on this when its absolutely not happening.

Modric left in 2012 and Bale left in 2014. We had our best CL run in 2019. We didn’t have that CL run because we sold those two and reinvested wisely. In fact, it’s arguable that if we hung on to both and put them in Poch’s team, we’d have won a league and maybe a CL. The only one of the 7 who replaced Bale that really was worth much was Eriksen and he cost 10 or 12 million which was a fee I dare say we could have afforded without offloading Bale.

If you sell Kane, you have to do it because you believe you’ll use the funds to strengthen the squad overall. I’ve no faith we’ll do that because we never have. And you take away a world class player who we have absolutely no chance of replacing with a player of similar quality because, to borrow Gareth Crooks phrase, you’re selling Elvis in the hope of signing The Beatles. Problem is, last time we signed S Club 7.

Then the argument becomes, “well we’ve always improved eventually when we’ve sold our best players so we should continue to sell our best players”. Correlation does not equal causation. It’s a daft argument and, funnily enough, may be part of the reason why we can’t get over the line in the big games. Had we held on to a Bale, Berbatov or Modric would we have actually won some silverware? And I’m not counting the 2008 League Cup.

The argument for selling Kane, which seems to gather momentum after each defeat, is similar to the “rip it up and start again. Play the kids instead of these overpaid prima donnas” argument that a certain section of all supporters seem to default to when things are going wrong.
