I generally side with Levy when it comes to valuations.
Sometimes its frustrating, and I completely understand the "just pay the money!" impulse people get.
However, Levy has spent good money in the past, if he refuses on someone like Grealish its often proven a fair position.

Reminded me a lot of the Berahinho negotiations where some on here were foaming at the mouth that Levy didn’t pay whatever WBA wanted and were critical of him for not giving his final bid at the start of negotiations, instead waiting for the last day.

I do honestly think if we had got Berahino the first time his career would have been entirely different. There was definitely something about him, reminded me a lot of Defoe.
Levy wont always get it right of course, but I think he gets more right that wrong.

The only issue I had with Levy over Berahino (and Grealish) was that on both occasions the money we offered right at the end of the window with our final bids for the players ended up being more than the players could've been signed for earlier in the transfer window. On both occasions Levy's game of bluff has resulted in his manager not getting a player he wanted and also, even if we had ended up getting them, the manager not getting any pre-season to work with that player.
Of course with hindsight in Berahino's case it looks like we dodged a bullet and perhaps that will end up being the case with Grealish as well.

Yeah never believe whats being reported though, we should have just not been as interested as SlyNews reported. The Sissoko comments recently confirm that when the reporter was outside Evertons ground saying he was on the way, he was in Levys office laughing.
I struggle to think of many players we were reportable about to buy and then didn't that in retrospect we were right (for whatever reason) not to continue.
The ones we were guzumped on like Willian there was little we could do
Berahino can be added to Damio, Grealish and a string of others that the fans went crazy when we didnt get them in, that would have been horrible signings.

I agree. That failed move messed him up a lot - he took it to heart, never really got over it, and his career plummeted as a result.
I was of the opinion that we should have gone back in for him the following window - if only to show that we don't just walk away when a player makes a fuss, submits a transfer request and demands a move to us. If you make that effort to secure a move to Spurs, imo, Spurs should commit to getting you out of the club you're in.
We didn't. And he's been spiralling downward ever since.
I feel the same way about Schneiderlin and Jay Rodriguez - we could have brought them in in 2015, but Levy was Levy, cheaped out and bought bargain bin cast-offs in Fazio and Stambouli instead. And neither Schneiderlin or Rodriguez ever returned to the heights that they reached under Poch back in 2014. Although at least Schneiderlin ended up at United, I suppose - made a lot of money despite his decline as a player.

Unless you add in the Poch factor. There’s not been many that have left Southampton that have looked better than when they were there under Poch (most of whom were already there, so perhaps his strength is improving them individually and as part of a unit, as opposed to identifying them in the first place). Be interesting how any of our bigger names do if they move on.
If we get to 31st with nothing doing I’ll be calling for Schneiderlin or Shelvey as wild cards!

I agree that Poch seems/does tend to bring out more from players, but in all honesty i never thought Schneiderlin was that impressive ( imo) at Southampton and since then he has hardly pulled up trees at two other clubs.
As for the remark about Shelvey i think he is a good player and one who should have gone with England in the summer, still only 26 and has the ability to pick a pass but not sure he would fit in here.

Fair enough. It was enough to suck Man U into buying him and he wouldn’t be the first to choke after moving there - his Everton form has been bad though, not sure if that’s confidence, injury, his role or as you as say his true level being found if he flattered to deceive at SCBC.
90% sure Shelvey wouldn’t fit in personality wise, occasionally players change their spots especially when they are in a more competitive and disciplined environment. If he was available for reasonable fee I’d put him on the list and ask Poch what he thinks!
