Bentaleb is the man in possession of that second midfield berth at the moment but he showed yesterday that he still has much improving to do and that we shouldn't overplay him or rely on him too much.

As I said, I get the feeling that Poch liked what he saw of Mason in pre season. Poch is a manager with a history of promoting players from within the ranks if he deems them good enough. And Mason has always been good - just hampered by a slight frame and injuries in his early years. He's toughened up now and, at 23, certainly has the maturity to go with his talent. And he is, IMO, far better suited to how Poch wants us to play than either Dembele or Paulinho.

So, if he can remain injury free, I think he can play a key part in our season - even if we sign Morgan Schneiderlin. He'd probably get mostly Europa League and other cup game appearances at first. But maybe more PL games as the season progresses.

I certainly hope so.

Pre-season is non-competitive, it's no judge of anything other than fitness.

I'm perhaps still tainted by having watched him get annihilated in a match for Doncaster a year or two ago. But I'd want to see him go to somewhere like Reading or Bournemouth (deliberately suggested because of their managers) for 6 months and do what Walker, Townsend and Rose did in their final loans.
 
Mason hasn't featured in any U21 games either. Think he might have a slight niggle. If what we saw in pre season is indicative of his ability, then he's next in line after Bentaleb IMO. Dembele is more suited for Capoue's role.

Apparently he picked up a knock in training just before the West Ham game.

Wasn't there some itk that he's hoping to play a part on Thursday?

Last thing Mason needs is another loan - especially at Championship level. You will only see him shine when he is surrounded by equally talented players.

And he is a different player now to what he was two years ago. He's more mature. He's more accustomed to playing in midfield. He's stronger. And tougher. If Poch liked what he saw of him in pre season and in training and believes that he can use him, then he will stay as part of the squad.

And a good thing too. Because if we are to lose both Dawson and Townsend, we're already in danger of having too few home grown players in our squad.

Isn't he too old for the U21s - he's 23 or 24 now IIRC?

I'd be delighted if that was the case. I've just not seen the evidence yet myself. I've also seen an awful lot of 'pre-season wonders' never hit those heights again.


Homegrown is no problem.

I think we've got 18 overseas players (limit 17), but that includes BAE and Khumalo.

Although we might not hit our 8 HG (we currently have 10 or 11, depending on what Ceballos counts as), that's just because Davies, Bentaleb and Kane are U21 (though very much first team squad players).

OK, cool.

But with Obika, Fryers, Fredericks and Ceballos overage too, that means only 2/3 out of those 5 can play in any one match, so several of them need to be moved for game time.
 
Fryers and Ceballos will most likely get loans IMO. Fredericks probably depends on what happens with the other RBs (is Walker fit? will someone bid for Naughton?). Likes of Obika and Khumalo don't really count for me, we're just helping them out. Will get lower league loans at some point.

It's called being a big club. We can have a streamline 18 man squad if you don't want to be competitive any more. Look at the massive task Liverpool had to undertake this summer to get back to having a top 5 sized squad again.
