Just needs a runners up medal in the World Cup and he’ll have a clean sweep of runners up medals in the major competitions.

So many similarities between England and Tottenham. Glorious failure, empty cliches about “we’ll be back better and stronger than ever coz we’re still learning” and perennial disappointment.

We Go Again.

Where has that phrase suddenly appeared from? Seems like a couple of years ago no-one said it but now it's all over the place when it comes to footballers talking about the next game, the next time, the next opportunity for failure.

The sub baffled me but maybe the thinking was “we’re getting tinkled on here, I need someone to break up the play” because bringing Grealish or some other offensive player on wouldn’t have been any use unless England got the ball. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t play Henderson in a million years, he’s dreadful on the ball.

I know this gets trotted out after every tournament but I was saying to my young lad when the Italians were pinging balls across the pitch “watch the first touch” and the Italian inevitably killed the ball stone dead. At one point my lad asked, “how did you know they’d do that.” After one of them, the ball got played to Mount and he trapped it further than I can kick it. There are a few water carriers still in the England squad.

First and foremost was the mindset of the English players after HT. Contrast the way we started the first to the second.

But then we needed to get possession. We'd intercept the ball and then hand it back to Italy. Very much like Mourinho-Spurs would. A lack of bravery from the manager second half. We needed players who are good on the ball to transition. Rice and Kane were successful at this first half.

I do credit Southgate for putting together a decent team. But he needs someone to manage the games. He had an assistant telling him what to do on the sideline, but not giving us fresh legs when we needed it, and all the other in-game decisions, left us wanting.

At least we can get back to Spurs now!

I seem to remember way back in history a manager being interviewed about winning a game after going down to ten men. Be subbed a defender and put a forward on. The interviewer said what on earth were you thinking and he replied I needed the opposition to be reacting to us and not the other way around. I needed to give them something to think about.

Watching Rashford take his stuttering run, trying to get the keeper to commit, made me think of what I heard on a podcast a while back, maybe the Crouch one, I can't remember. Anyway whatever the pod, and whoever the guest was, they were relating that when Germany (going back a few years) got to penalties in a tournament, each player was told which way to shoot. No leaving it to the player to decide, they were instructed to go low/high/left/right. The idea being it took some of the pressure off the player so execution was all they had to think about (not insignificant obviously) but no decision making in terms of which way to go.
