Eric Dier

If Sanchez and Tanganga are being moved on and he's being kept as a squad player there's no prob in that as we are not going to get in several CBs a keeper and possibly an AM.
If he's being kept as part of our best XI then it's fudged up. A goalkeeper and then a starting CB have to be our top priorities.

I have no problem with Dier being retained this summer, I just think it would be a backward step to offer him a new contract, he can go for free next year.

He's ok as a squad player, can play in several positions as cover for emergencies, and rotate in for cup games against lower division teams.

What is the point of being able to play in several positions if you are rank average at best in all of them?
It's emergency cover for injuries, not expecting to play him. If we have three injuries at RB we can throw him in, similar at CB. It would need even more injuries to need him at DM. But these scenarios do happen even if it's just for a couple of weeks.

We're going to be working within a budget and squad players like that can be useful. Even the best Utd teams had the likes of John O'Shea that could cover several positions.

Just read that Spurs will nit be discussing a new contract with Dier before the summer. Makes sense as the new manager hopefully will make the decision that he is does not warrant one.

What would he coach? The kids how to speak Portuguese? He lacks basic understanding of defending

I don't know as I don't work at the club or know how he performs on the training pitch or how he interacts with players and staff. I do know that Wenger wasn't much of a player but was a great manager and Bobby Moore was a great player but a useless manager, you can't know by watching a player if they have what it takes to work in coaching.

Yup. There's absolutely no need to sign him up to a new deal. We aren't protecting our value in any way by doing so. Let him play his last year out and if he somehow earns a new deal then so be it but don't give him a new deal now. That's just rewarding mediocrity.

The problem with that rationale is that he’s made it crystal clear he wants to play CB. Doubt he’d be happy filling in for injured personnel at his age. If he’s still adamant he will only play at CB then he needs to do it at another club.

Maybe, maybe not. If he leaves us he knows that it's going to be a step down. I can't see him refusing to play in another position if it's the difference between playing and not playing.
