Eric Dier

Yes, very much so. And also to enable Romero to play on the right of the three and support the RWB, something Sanchez is not capable of because he is uncomfortable on the ball.

Absolutely. Add one more deeper player that's at least somewhat comfortable playing under pressure. Will still be vulnerable to high pressing teams, but better.

Dier is a good defender so would be good to have him back. But he is also vulnerable to the press, only marginally better than Sanchez in that respect. What we need imho is for press resistance in front of them and an out ball for the defenders.

You need both. Playing through a high press starts at the back, including the goalkeeper. Defenders need option, but also just the quality on the ball to do that.

I think Dier is more than marginally better than Sanchez in that respect. He's also well suited to the central role where he'll usually get a bit more space and time allowing Romero to play RCB, and he's probably our best centre back on the ball under pressure.

I think it will make a bit of a difference. But we will still be short on quality when playing through pressure.

I think we missed Eric orchestrating the defence, and Skipp protecting it. Which one made the bigger difference?, I'd probably say we missed Skipp more, but probably a bit of both.

Says a lot for how far we have fallen that Dier is being spoken of in terms of being a future captain.

But that’s not Dier’s fault and he does have leadership qualities which are sorely lacking elsewhere as evidenced by the whole team playing like headless chickens for the last 20 min of Wednesday’s game. Harry Kane doesn’t cut it in that regard despite being England captain. As others have said we needed to be stronger in central defence and midfield to manage out the game properly. Maybe Bentancur will become a leader but he’s barely been here 5 minutes and maybe Skipp will become that player in time but still I’d hope we strengthen our spine with what’s required come summer.

Been our best player this season when he has played and been solid for years.

He has been very good this season. Completely disagree he has been solid for years. Certainly wasn’t last season. We have bigger problems to address than Dier but he wouldn’t have even been considered as a candidate for captain under Poch as your captain is usually pretty close to undroppable, which doesn’t describe Dier very well in the Poch years.
