Mourinho sees him as a centre back. He sees himself as a centre back. He has a lot of the skills needed to be a very good centre back.

He's 26 now, getting to the age where he should be approaching the peak of his career. His experience playing as a centre back, particularly doing so consistently, is still somewhat limited. Playing without either Vertonghen or Alderweireld to act as the experienced centre back even less experienced.

Wouldn't be at all surprised if he improves quite a bit with more experience and under the instructions of Mourinho. Can hope at least.
