ENIC

I love Levy and totally thankful for what he has done for spurs, as a 34,000 dying swan of a club we could have easily turned into a Villa, that's how we headed for years. With the team we have, to have had players like Bale, Modric, Berbatov etc and to have a stadium that's going to be amazing, like beyond anything anyone has in the country, like I said on my post yesterday...this is dreamland and because of the business head of Levy and Lewis

Apart from the sexy bit (we really need to kill that word) it was a good read.

Spot on!

It's all part of the "I expect Spurs to let me down" bilge, originating from press and TV punditry from long ago, sadly 'some' Spurs fans have adopted it as an ideology which now has soured their support and outlook of Spurs.

I like @Grays_1890 post above. its spot on.

If my expectations are unreasonable then i'm not being "let down".

I liked that article in the Guardian also.

Bottom line is simply, 'they' dont like losing! But who the feck does? We should send some of the miserable feckers on Aston Villa supporters course.....then they would know what tinkled off means.

My old dad said it was a 'coping mechanism' for defeat - he was a long suffering Middlesbrough fan..........knew a lot about losing back in the day.

Great post and one which I agree with 100%, after the fall from grace of the 80's and the experiment by Scholar to turn us into a mega club we limped through the nineties and became a also run club. For the first time in a long while we could not be referred to as a top club ( as much as I hate having to say that), but thanks to Enic and Levy we are now once again seen as a challenger and we will only improve under the present set up and the new ground around the corner.

The future is bright the future is Lilywhite. :)

In fairness, it didn't just originate from "press and TV punditry". My own dad became a fan in the mid-50s - right about the time when Spurs were approaching our historical peak. I became a fan in the late 70s - the glory days of Hoddle and Ardiles and back-to-back cup wins (and that was when the cup really meant something!)

But ever since those peaks, we have had literally decades of "false dawns". We've threatened to revisit those past glories on a regular basis and - so often - have fallen ever so slightly short. And that's not been a fiction of press or punditry... it's been our lives as Spurs fans. It's hardly a surprise that some fans end up with an almost love-hate relationship with the team. There were times during the 90s when I was a regular at the ground, where I'd be muttering "feckin' Spurs!" under my breath a lot more often than celebrating a win.

In the end though, I'm by nature an optimist when it comes to Spurs and I firmly believe every new dawn will be the real thing. And this time is no different. We're in better shape as a club than we have been for most of my life. And the future looks even brighter.

Surely you don't believe that. The media never, ever creates a trend before the fans do. There were fans who realised our ludicrously long history of false dawns and falls from promising positions (not to mention straight up bad luck like dodgy lasagnas and losing our best player to a goddamn literal f*cking bolt of lightning) made us a less consistent, more wobbly team than most when high up chasing success, and the media ran with it from there.

Roy Keane was a Spurs fan long before he uttered that 'Spurs will always let you down' phrase on air. If anything, attributing to the term 'sexy' to the nasty evil meanie TV media and press fellows, while believing that 'some' Spurs fans were then duped by those entities into adopting it, is only ensuring that the problem itself will never, ever go away.

I'm with @Jurgen the German on this: only the team can end the term, by actually winning things over a long period of time and not falling at the final hurdle. But it absolutely does exist, and is a valid term to use considering our history of mental fragility and let-downs (not just losses: 'sexy' means more that that, it's about the bloody context of those losses) . Is it a self-reinforcing belief? Maybe, but it's difficult to see how to mitigate the bad effects of calling a spade a spade, because that's what it is.

Edit: I wonder how many of the posters who now angrily claim that the term 'sexy' is obsolescent and unnecessary were around when we lost 4-3 to a ten-man, pre-Mansour Emirates Marketing Project after leading 3-0 at half-time. It was one of the very best comebacks in FA Cup history, a part of City folklore...and I watched that happen, as did many of you, I'm sure. How many of you were also around when we threw away a thirteen-point lead over Arsenal ('mind the gap!' cried our giddy supporters) and finished fourth....only to be the only team in PL history to ever have been knocked into the Europa League because a lower team pulled off one of the unlikeliest feats of all time and won the CL but finished sixth. How many of you.....ah, forget it.

If you don't think we're uniquely cursed with the ability to fail in macabre, horrifying ways after getting ourselves into good positions, fair enough. But to also think that other fans are only being deceived by the yeevil TV media, while great fonts of wisdom like yourselves are resistant to such temptations....that's only burying one's head in the sand in the face of the grim evidence of incidents like the above.

You are right that the media didn't create the term. It seemed to come from social media. It definitely was popularised for the 'banter' culture on the fighting rooster forum.

Now its fudging everywhere and its horrible.

It wont be long until its a word for becomes detached from football and enters wider usage.

How long before you have stupid kids complaining about sexy things that happened to them.

Soon the name of the club will just become synonymous with fudging things up at the last minute to the wider world.

Like Roy Munson in Kingpin

The media have propagated the sp:*sy thing! Which plays into many Spurs fans insecurities and you end up with some very spooked and paranoid fans. It can't be much fun for the fans effected, not my idea of enjoyment.
Can't be arsed to be all doom and gloom. I'm not deluded and enjoy my Spurs football and football in general. I just don't get so screwed up when things don't go the way I want them to.

In general it's an end to end game where we have 6 decent chances and the opposition have 3 or 4 decent chances... I am not surprised if a chance goes in or does not go in... I'm not surprised if we win or lose, so I don't get massively animated at winning or losing.

I get animated if we put together a beautiful goal, e.g. the first against Leicester in the cup when something like Carroll played it to Onomah who defly flicked it to Chadli who did the right thing (shot across the keeper to get the rebound) which went straight to Eriksen who calmly drilled it into the postage stamp, right into the bottom corner, that was beautiful and made me shout.

I get animated if someone tries a backpass but only kicks it 3 yards, straight to Vardy.

But the overall game result... not so much. Not sure if that makes me pragmatic or dead inside?

If we don't buy any experienced players over the age of 21 in this transfer window, then we will know all we want to know about Pochettino, Levy and our league title ambitions ! It will only show our lack of ambitions in trying to win the league title. This has been our best chance to win the league title for years ! We could be 7 points behind Arsenal and Leicester now but all the teams have been throwing away easy points. So, want us to fight for the league title as long as we can ! To do that, we need to improve the quality of our squad by buying more experienced players !

Ha-ha so who will be our next Andy Booth / Sirhyz Rebrov / Gregorz Raziak / Helder Postiga / Fraizer Campbell / Roberto Soldado?

What about letting the manager do his thing and see how it turns out? Pretty much everyone on this board has called more things wrong than they have right since Poch came in. What makes you so certain that what you are demanding this time is right?

I still get tinkled off when we lose games, but like you I have been around long enough to know that these things happen in football and its not as simple as pushing a button on abacus games to get it right.

I'm incandescent with rage when we loose but I've now got it down liveable levels. But I'm an old git, 63 this September - and have seen some nasty reactions to loosing in my informative years - from mainly Chelsea fans in the70's

You are just a young sprog mate :)

Let me just say that I am much looking forward to conceding a stupid goal (like defenders running into a corner and leaving a towering center-half unmarked at a corner) and seeing the ensuing reactions be variations of 'so, so sexy'. :p However, one can easily get around this word filter by making it 'typical Spurs' as well, you know.
