Danny Rose

You say that, but watching City yesterday I didnt give a brick about Walker playing for them.

And while he did fine, I was in no way missing him, wishing he stayed or any of it.

I think Rose, like Walker, is massively over rated (as in 'good', not 'great') - and if Utd want to give us £45-50m for him Ill take it an not regret that at all.

And, if he stays, performs and does well - Ill be delighted all the same.

Dont agree, losing Walker is a massive loss, no coincidence we haven't looked half as good without him.

Now Sanchez is out we either go for a back 4 or a 3 with Davies as one of the centre backs, giving Rose a chance to stake his claim

Aurier has been reminding me of someone recently and I realised last night it is Andre 3000

?? who he?

City are better for having Walker in their team. Many of their fans have been raving about his performances so far (though I imagine they're bleating on about all of them right now!).

I don't think Tripps and Aurier have been as good as Walker was at this point last season for us. So i have to disagree, we have missed him and City are better off for it.

Has our slow and ponderous play this season in their absence not given you food for thought?

Individually in comparison to their replacements i can respect your opinion even if i disageee but it seems obvious to me that the team misses having them both on the wings as much for their individual ability as their prescence in the attacking third stretching play creating space in the middle for our attackers to do their thing

Just...no, I dont miss Walker and havent missed Rose.

I think the issues with the team currently are more the injury list than the absence of those two. Wanyama and Dembele, for example, are huge loses to our midfield and effect everything.

Everytime Trippier puts in a peach of a cross or pass I am grateful he was there and not Walker, as Walker simply never had that in his locker.

Its not his fault if we arent getting success from those crosses/passes - Im delighted they are there though.

Davies Ive argued at length, little point going over it - but short version is I think I prefer him.

Its easy to point at a supposed lack of pace/directness/dynamism as the source of our problems.

Personally I dont think that Rose/Walker offer anywhere near as much as people assume, and also that our issues lay elsewhere.

Rose and Walker pin teams back, they are explosive - even if Walkers end product isnt as great our attacking play down the wings was relentless and wore teams down. As much as I do rate Davies and Trippier who have big plus points they are not in the same league overall....

Why did they have license to go forward so much?

Wanyama/Dembele in the centre.

Last season, when both Rose and Walker were out, did we NOT pin teams back with Davies and Trippier? I believe we did. In fact, I believe we finished the season playing some excellent football. And in attack it was more cultured/with more quality with those wing backs (IMO).

Whats the difference now?

A lack of Dembele/Wanyama in the centre. NOT a lack of Rose/Walker.

All our issues stem from there. The freedom to play comes from that platform. The ability to advance up the pitch. For the wing backs to push up and stay up. For the like of Alli to make runs without fear... Pretty well all the things we are lacking stem from missing that foundation.

What are you referring to here?

I am referring to ‘word reaching journalists’ at a certain rag that he had been ‘fuming’ over not being in the squad for Arsenal. Poch’s quotes after being informed (let’s face it he wasn’t thrilled) suggest to me that someone knows exactly what they are doing OR someone is incredibly (and I mean, incredibly) thick. In fairness I wouldn’t have forgiven the first two times he flapped to someone outside the club. This? It is taking the tinkle IMO. If Rose is super thick, I’d hav expected an apology or statement soon thereafter. He has avoided making any unequivocal statements on the matter. The prick.

Im not putting all our issues down to not having Walker and Rose, Im saying they are better full backs than Davies and Tripper. Is not having Wanyama and Dembele in the centre a big miss for us? Of course. But I certainly wouldnt put Rose and Walker's success down to them - they contantly had markers on them as teams recognised their threat, but couldnt hold them stop them for long periods. Trippier and Davies arent targeted like they were as arent considered the same threat.

Look at it this way, do you see any of the top teams bidding 40-50m for Trippier and Davies like Rose and Walker? No, because they're not as good....

I think you're right in your assessment of why we are struggling (identifying Dembele and Wanyama axis). What I would argue is that Rose and Walker have a higher overall ceiling than Davies and Trippier. I would say against City I would want Rose to play because I think he can go to another level compared to Davies.

Me personally i prefer watching us as a team stretch our opponents creating pockets of space in the middle cutting inside and playing through our opponents much more than seeing another ball launched in to a congested box from deep/wide - its a handy tool to have in your locker as an alternative and looks good for Trippier in the assists column but it's not for me in terms of watching us play as a team.

I would have Rose all day. Opposition defences struggle to cope with his pace and power. He also has a big motor and gets through a power of work, something Davies struggles with. Davies is underwhelming in comparison.

The initial reports were unsubstantiated journo guff which then saw Rose come out and set the record straight - how i saw it anyway

I dont agree, but it seems to be the common concensus on here.

For me Rose and Walker are as good as they are ever going to be, and while its "very good", I think they are at their ceiling already - and both actually leave a lot to be desired in an attacking capacity.

It seems to be something of an unpopular opinion on here, but c'est la vie!

Its a funny one. Maybe a bit of forumitis creeping in, I dont know. Your'e a poster Ive a lot of time for, so please dont take it the wrong way.

People tend to start arguing in binary terms online. Its almost inevitable, it seems.

Your post reads as all Trippier does is launch it in, and all Walker does is stretch teams. Im sure thats not what you actually mean, but you see how it comes across?

I think we play a much more complete game with Trippier/Davies. Both players get chalk on their boots and stretch teams, and yet both players use the ball better, and in a more varied way, IMO.

I think it does Trippier a disservice to say he launches into a congested box only. I think he uses the ball very intelligently. Yes, sometimes that is a long ball into the box, an early ball forward or a cross from wide - but not exclusively. And it is these facets, in addition to offering width, that make him the superior attacking player.

Your preferred style described above? Im a big fan of - and I think we were playing that way brilliantly at the end of last season with Trippier and Davies. Scoring for fun, with variety, and with them both being integral to that.

It is inevitable Rose is going to get more games, its all about the squad etc... And while he will look fast, and dynamic and aggressive... Just pay attention to how little he actually achieves with the ball. Have a look and see if we actually stretch teams more. If his output actually amounts to anything - honestly, a hell of a lot of the time, it doesnt. Quite often the ball doesnt even stay in our possession long once it goes to him.

How did you rate our play at the end of last season?
It was great! Im not saying necessarily it was a bad thing to get 50 odd million for Walker when we had Trippier who I have always been on of his biggest supporters on here. And Davies is exceptionally solid and can be productive going forward. All Im saying is Walker and Rose were/are better full backs for us than Davies and Trippier. I do think Aurier has the scope to achieve similar standard to Walker but needs a season under his belt before we begin to see him come to fruition....

I disagree, to be honest, but can respect that position.

As I said, its my belief both Rose and Walker are really quite over rated, but then so is every player by someone!

I agree with you on Davies and Trippier, I think they are tremendously under-rated in turn and as you say, use the ball intelligently and with quality.

Davies has dropped a little in the last couple of weeks but he uses the ball in a more varied and intelligent way (although the quality of Rose's passing I'd say is actually pretty good), but what I also like about Davies is the variation in his running. He'll go into the center more often which will create confusion and space on the outside, and seems to do this well and fairly regularly.

Trippier - he just has a tonne of quality on the ball and is ahead of Walker there. He seems to have improved his 1v1 defending this season and his crossing is light years ahead of Walker (although Walker's final ball improved massively under Poch).

I'm sceptical that pace needs to be the be all and end all in a full/wing back. It's about timnig of runs, it's about use of the ball, and it's about the whole team functioning. It's rare that you get two players in a straight foot race enough at this level to make that much difference, and both Davies and Trippier are no slouches anyway.

I should say, while again its probably contrary to popular opinion - I think Walker is by far the better defender, particularly 1 on 1.

Trippier is improving, for sure - but by the time he left Walker had improved tremendously as a defender.
