Danny Rose

What an odd post

It raises a point though. What people expect of a player isn't always the same as what the coach does. Some will rate players lower (both in general and in the ratings threads) simply because they're not the kind player they want or he's been asked to play a different role.

I would like Spurs full backs to be good defenders first and foremost. Don't think that's too radical or asking too much. To suggest I want the manager sacked if he plays Rose

Not saying you do, but teams these days often depend on having attacking FBs. Formation wise players get moved around, but they are essentially wingers/wing backs of old. Playing a back 4 the classic way is out. Instead we have defensive midfielders that can cover when they go forward. Basically your formation changes through the various stages of play.

Well Walker and Naughton are classed as good attacking fullbacks, and yet this season both of them have been involved in bad defending which lead to goals for the opposition more than doing well at the other end.

I think that has a lot to do with our midfield. We need a better CB pairing. I'm hoping Vertonghen - Kaboul will be it. We are seriously lacking in organization and leadership at the back.

Our transfer strategy must reflect the way our manager want the team to play.
A solid defensive full back that isn't quick and can't attack might do very well if we're going to play 442 with two banks of 4,
if we're going to shape the team in AVBs image and need full backs to keep width in a 433 formation with inverted wingers however ..

How about a fullback who is quick, good going forward AND can defend? That's all I ask.

Not many of those around. Our left side has been somewhat vulnerable for a few seasons now because Bale isn't as good as Lennon defensively. Hope Sandro coming back and AVB getting one or two quality players this summer will improve us. It's a team game. Fluidity and all that.

He had a decent game today in my mind. Team conceded six but oddly i don't think he was personally responsible for any of them. Closed down well and defended his side well and linked up once or twice offensively.

This all day. Personally I'd rather a full back be great defensively and poor going forward.

To play the way we want to you need both. It's honestly one of the most important positions in the team imo. Any other position you can afford to be only good at one thing but fullbacks in today's game and with our style you need fullbacks who can attack and defend. Our fullbacks need to be able to operate on the right and left sides of the opponents penalty area, it's the best way to stretch the opposition when you have possession. Like Bayern the wingers cut inside the fullbacks overlap and they rip teams apart that way.

It's a pretty simple formula imo.

His passing wasn't very convincing though I thought.

I agree, those players are rare. If we want a complete full back who's very good going forward and solid defensively we'll either have to pay a massive fee or develop the player ourselves I think.

I have my doubts about Rose being ready to be a first choice player for us next season, but he seems to have quite a bit of potential and I definitely wouldn't mind him getting quite a few games next season.

Paolo Di Canio: Danny Rose has bright future

Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio has predicted a bright future for on-loan defender Danny Rose.

The 22-year-old is ineligible to play against parent club Tottenham on the final day of the season and so will play the final game of his loan at the Stadium of Light against Southampton on Sunday.

Rose has impressed during his time with the Black Cats and has intimated a willingness to consider a permanent move to Wearside in the summer.

But whatever the colour of the shirt the England Under-21 international is wearing once the new season gets underway, Di Canio has seen enough to believe he can make a significant impact in the game if he continues to work hard.

"He's got a great future in front of him," said Di Canio. "He's a powerful guy. The strength and elasticity he's got mean he can run forward with the ball and beat people easily.

"It's obvious he can play at the top level, but everybody has to improve.

"In my opinion, he can improve a lot defensively. He's an attacking-minded left-back, but he has to improve a lot defensively.

"People have to realise there are two phases in the game - possession ball and non-possession ball. It's crucial to be good in both situations.

"I don't want to say he's not very good when we're not in possession of the ball, but he can improve a lot. He can improve the timing of his tackling and he needs to learn when and how to be aggressive.

"But everybody can improve, and he's only 22.

"It's easy to talk about his quality, but if we don't tell him he has to improve, he's probably never going to."

On the subject of Rose's future, Di Canio added: "He's our player at the moment. Sunday will be his last game and then we will see. I don't want to talk about the future because we have to focus on the next game."

Seems like he is trying to get himself a transfer this summer

What a prick. How about work hard in pre-season and get yourself a start instead of moaning. Jesus christ.
