Danny Rose

Maybe the players (and manager) are sick of the board cutting corners of signings and it's a underhand threat to the board.

The players he would have upset are the ones we need to improve on anyway.

Or maybe he just said it because he wanted to!

But it isn't his job to do that, that is Pochettino's job if he is unhappy with the board. As a player, you have signed your contract which presumably you were happy with and if you now feel you should have input into signings and budgets then you need to retire and become a manager. Until then, do what you are paid to do.

Just because those players aren't up to his perceived standards they still play a role within the squad. You can't have 25 players all of the level you would expect for a starting 11, its about the squad.

As I've said, he may well be right in the content that he discussed but he is the wrong person discussing it. Not one person on this thread can persuade me otherwise.

Quick google found this quote from Poch after we dropped out of the CL :
"
"Our objective is to be competitive in the Premier League and Champions League but we need to show more, maybe to add more quality in our squad.
"We have quality, yes, to compete in the Premier League but maybe to share both, maybe after today we see we struggle a little bit.''

So Rose has not said anything about squad depth that isn't already out there. Whether or not it's his place to comment on this is another matter. But saying we need more depth in the squad isn't particularly controversial imo.
I very much doubt he's gone off message. Everything he's said speaks (to me) of loving Poch and wanting to stay to see the success that is around the corner.
He just needs to persuade Walker to do the same.

Mind you, this is the player who went on Soccer AM and said Poch had put on weight and couldn't join in training sessions anymore because of it.
So maybe he does like a bit of dangerous freelancing :)

Apologies if this comes across sarcy, it isn't meant to but I feel like its groundhog day with this.

Poch is the person saying that, he is the manager and that is his job. He is supposed to appraise the squad and its quality and will have to do so in public. As a player, you expect that and accept it as part of your job.

As manager or chairman, you don't expect a player to discuss things beyond his remit on sensitive issues. That is the difference.

To be totally clear, nothing that Danny Rose has said is necessarily incorrect, it is just that he shouldn't be saying it. The content of what he said is for Poch or above to put out there, not a current player.

That's fair enough

I do think if the players commenting is the only way we can change it I have no problem, but understand why you would.

Any player that doesn't take responsibility for the team falling short and thinks that the easy option is to move to a side that is already winning things, probably doesn't have the mentality that we need right now.

Doesn't really apply to the players like Kane/Alli - they have done pretty much every thing the can to try and win things.

Players do interviews, it doesn't mean he's moving Steff. Plus that interview is seriously not bringing up anything controversial.

Also, like the Lamela situation, it's unlikely he's a great transfer target given he was on an operating table a week ago having his knee cut open.

Everyone needs to chill out about our team being ripped apart this transfer window. I bet we don't lose more than Walker against our wishes. Sissoko can obviously do one but other than that, Levy and Poch have got this.

This has nothing to do with worries about our team being 'ripped apart' and as I repeatedly said in the Walker thread for weeks I trust Poch and am aware that no-one will leave without his agreement. That being said, if you genuinely believe that the Rose interview does not potentially undermine what the club is doing behind the scenes, then I suppose the discussion is over. I think you can tell the difference between a player doing an interview versus a player 'placed' to do an interview. No-one is saying he will leave this season (unless Poch decided to cash in on both) but IMO, hear in the sand here is not especially helpful. Regardless, what we CAN agree on is that Poch has this sorted on all sides!

This was one of the most interesting interviews I've heard for a long time - honest and not the normal dull stuff.

I don't know if it was only me - but he clearly isn't impressed with last summers signings (I assume Wanyama aside) and like a few of us said the players want to win things and will start to leave other wise.

So one player doesn't really see this season as a success?

Fantastic. It was interesting and honest. I don't want that from our players. Be quiet and talk on the pitch. In fairness, Danny hasn't been able to do that for three months so perhaps he wanted to make sure he was heard? No excuses IMO.

What did he make public that Poch wouldn't like? He didn't name drop Walker, if you or anyone else wants to speculate/assume that's who he was talking about then that's up to you but he didn't say anoything outrageous and was merely issuing reasons ANY player would have for them to want to move onto pasteurs new. Do I have an issue with a player of ours saying we're a nearly club at the moment? No, that's what we are at the moment. You know it, I know it everyone in this country knows it - he hasn't said it in a degrading way and that along with everything else he said really wasn't a big deal....

They share the same agent.
Apologies if it might appear I made an untenable connection.
You say we're a 'nearly' club. Frankly, I think that is absurd!!!
Again, I ask you, WHY was he talking at all? What do you suppose was his agenda? The love of 'being honest' and 'giving supporters an insider view from the heart?' Call me a cynic but somehow I doubt it...

Anyway I think that's it for me. Lets hope we all get the resolutions we want. Mine is whatever our manager desires!!!

I'm guessing there are some pretty tight clauses in Rose's contract about what he is permitted to discuss with the media. To state we are a nearly club seems the type of thing that would have been proscribed as it is talking about the club in a negative way. It may be true @har1984 that it is only stating what he believes but it's still (imo) inappropriate coming from one of our players.

Maybe Rose couldn't give a toss, I don't know, but I'm damned sure Levy would not be best pleased hearing that unflattering take on the club. Rose has been outstanding for the club on the pitch and importantly gets on like a house on fire with Poch so I'm not too worried about his immediate future.

He seems a very genuine and a straight-talking guy so my instinct is that he simply made an unintentional faux pas. It's easy enough to imagine that in trying to put an honest opinion across he got himself into a spot and maybe decided it was best to just carry on in the hope no one would notice.

No doubt Poch will have a quiet but firm word in his ear when he gets back to say Be a bit more careful next time sonny boy.:D

Rose (IMO) was actually referring to people's opinions but not neccessrily his own. When he was talking about him and the club he used the words us and me.

What he was saying is what plenty of others have said this year ... were nearly there... were very nearly the best side in the country

As @Gutter Boy says, that actually highlights how good and how far we have come

I think If rose had said it in a more positive charismatic way it would have come across different but that really isn't his style or demeanour. He is a straight talking Yorkshireman

Blown out of proportion IMO.

Just listened to the whole thing, he was asked about the fact that Tottenham don't pay top wage and if he thought that would hamper progress. He said it depends on the player, saying "Kane wants to stay and break all records for the club" so it's easy for the club to keep a player with that mindset happy, however "maybe another player might think we are a nearly club and want to leave" in which case nothing the club can do.

Just playing devils advocate really.

The only *dodgy* part, is that his exact words were "maybe you...ummm..maybe a player might think we are a nearly club". I don't think he meant he thinks it though.

Linked with United in Tomorrow's Mirror. Using quotes from his five live interview all out of context as usual.

Could see the City temptation but United really ? the dross football they play would like to think he'd swerve them.

Perfect summings up.
Nothing more in it than this.

You have a point but I still feel he was unwise to voice those opinions. Maybe inadvertantly, maybe naively, he is giving ammunition to rival fans to taunt us with. He has let the cat out of the bag.

Now Poch will need to get angry with his players, demanding that they absolutely refuse to accept that we are a nearly club. Hopefully he will go one better than he did on his return last Autumn, tell the players how he was fuming that this got out, then turn it to advantage by absolutely demanding that they annihilate every team that stands in their way of a trophy next season in order to put this humiliating tag to bed once and for all.

Do you think any if our players believe and accept we are now a nearly club??? The way they have reacted this season to me makes me believe they see big things in the horizon

I also havent heard a fan from any other cub mention it yet as I don't think many people even listen to that show

It's not what I think, it's what Rose said!!!

'A player might feel that he’s done enough at Tottenham, and he might fancy a change. You might feel that Tottenham is a nearly-club, we nearly go close to winning the league, we nearly go close to winning the semi-final of the FA Cup.'

Hardly surprising that gutter rags like the Metro have seized on his quotes to ratchet up the rumours about him and others wanting out. It's all over the media now, just what we needed.

NOT!

He was honest and like other's have said, he removed himself from the quotes almost. To me it sounds like he's on board with the project and think's that it's going in the right direction, believing that players who don't see the progress are thinking about other things.
