Covid outbreak at Spurs

The bit that I don’t understand about any player (and person in general) choosing not to be vaccinated is why they would trust the club doctors for any injuries or other medical advice.

Or why they're happy to take some experimental drug that most legit doctors are advicing against once they get sick.

Please don’t try and equate those footballers collapsing with the vaccine without some solid evidence.

Regardless, my point stands: I bet most club doctors would recommend their players get the vaccine, and some players have chosen to disregard that advice. The fact their career depends on their health is even more reason to trust the doctor, and the risk of COVID is greater than the risk of the vaccine for most.

I'm not equating them. But there will be footballers that do. The vaccines can cause myocarditis (inflamation of the heart muscle) that can last for 2 and a half months after so it is possible. Covid itself also causes problems with the heart.

Comparing a doctors advice for physical injury is a bit different to listening to their advice for choosing whether to be vaccinated or not. There is no evidence about effects of these vaccinations long term, it is very much an unknown. Doctors have been treating footballers injuries for decades with a proven track record, there is no comparison and I say this as someone who was happy to be vaccinated….

Some factors perhaps more specific to footballers. Young and fit as they are. Better looked after in terms of their health than the vast majority of people so should be more aware of underlying conditions. Short term negative effects of a vaccine might hurt their chances short term in a highly competitive environment.

Mostly though, just the sheer amount of misinformation that gets spread around.

The oslo xmas party. 120 invites. All double vaxxed. All took lateral flow tests the day before. 70 got infected. All mild or no symptoms.
Nobody wore masks, so they spread it and caught it. And that's where the problem lies. My post doesn't just advocate vaccination, but also masking to prevent contracting or spreading the virus, even if fully vaccinated. If you want to continue playing, you have to go into a bit (or a lot) of a bubble. Vaxxing alone doesn't achieve this.

Alekarus was saying he'd have very strict guidlines to stop players catching it. I'm saying the oslo party they took precautions which didn't stop them catching the virus.
I know I replied to this, but I will reply again. The Oslo party didn't take all the precautions. Did they test them a few minutes before the party? And, more importantly, did everyone wear a properly fitted N95/KN95 mask?

Ofcourse not they were eating and drinking. Bit difficult to do with a mask on.

This is endemic now. You can't tell footballers that they can't have any life outside of football.

What looks likely to happen is after this wave of omicron. The government will scrap testing and isolation. You will only get tested if you are very sick. Covid will be treated the same as a cold, flu or norovirus. Then we can move on.

Serveilance testing will carry on as will genomic sequencing to keep tabs on the virus.

Well, if they want to have a life outside of football in this kind of environment, that's their prerogative. However, if you know your work depends on staying fit and virus-free, then you should make sure you do just that by taking all precautions outside of your work environment. But while they are working they would need to follow very strict guidelines. So if they get sick, they don't drag the rest of them team down with them.

This is endemic. It will be with us forever. Everyone will be exposed no matter how hard you try. We have very good immunity in the population so this will probably be as good as it gets. You can't tell footballers you can't go to restaurants, bars, cinema, friends houses... What you going to do lock them up in the training ground? Only time they're allowed to leave is on match days?

As i said in a previous post. It's likely that after this wave the government will stop testing. Clubs will aswell. You will only get a test if you are feeling sick. Go home come back when you feel better or have a negative test. If we are going to live with it we will have to treat it as we do flu. Which by the way is far more lethal now than covid if you catch it. It's just not as prevalent.

I have a friend who had it 2 months ago, and he still doesn't have any energy. He was fully vaccinated about 2 months before he got it, And he is as fit as one gets. Runs marathon sub 3 hours, does triathlon, hill climb running etc. He still has no taste or smell. Was not admitted to hospital, just had it like a flu. I think there must be something genetic that causes some people to get really sick, and other not even knowing that they've had it. Really strange.

It seems unhealthy (overweight and/or older) people, especially men, get bad covid.

But healthy people, and often women, get more long covid (often without ever being that unwell). The reason for that is that it is supposed to be caused by an overactive immune response - i.e. its your own body gone in too hard and damaged yourself, rather than the virus damaging it. That seems to fit with your friend's situation. I'm still a bit like that, 14 months later.

Apparently some of those infected just entered the restaurant, used the bathroom, and then left. Or so I've heard...

From my experience with Norwegian Chritmas parties, I'm pretty sure the party guests initially only wore masks while not seated, and probably not at all as the party progressed.

The issue is that it is not endemic YET. When it does become endemic and kills as many people as the flu does, then I agree with the above.

And the flu is not far more lethal now than Covid. Where did you get these data???

Why do you think it's not endemic yet? Since july the amount of people in hospital with covid and the amount of cases has been flat. It was the new normal till omicron came along.

The latest figures i could find. Covid killed 952 people in the week up to nov 19th flu killed 452. There were more than twice as many covid cases as flu.

In the same vein practically every single type of medication you get in your local pharmacy has side effects, just that most people are not allergic to them. And that applies to your over the counter regular pain killers

Yep agree with this and fine those that insist on continuing with this nonsense

Agree. Any doctor recomending medication to you should make you aware of any possible side effects. They should also discuss with you the risks vs the benefits. You should then make a decision if it's right for you.

Vaccines, obviously you also have a responsibility to protect those around you aswell.

To base your claim that it has become endemic based on one data point is scientific folly. I will call it endemic when the number of Covid deaths and flu deaths when everyone is unvaccinated is more or less equivalent. That is at around 0.02% (or 0.15%, if you also include pneumonia) annually. We're nowhere close to that now with Covid among the unvaccinated.

Stats from CDC (not the Daily Mail).
