Clinton Njie

Is that a serious statement about Eto'o having pace but little else?

Yes. Compare top class CFs - Eto'o didn't have the skill of a Suarez, Messi, Aguero, Henry, Ronaldo, or size/power/physical attributes like a Shearer, Benzema, Rooney, Lewandowski, Drogba, Ibrahimovic etc. Eto'o was still a top class CF but was fast and could finish but how many of his goals involved beating a man or two? The image I have of him is beating the offside trap and finishing. He wasn't a winger in the same was that MIchael Owen wouldn't have been as good as a winger, and I don't think Njie will be either

Lol!!

It's one thing to say that you think N'Jie hasn't got much more than pace to his game; but to say Eto'o didn't have the skill to beat a man?? Lol, i guess you've forgotten his bamboozling of Rio Ferdinand in the CL final of 2009?

:D

Relative to top class CFs, Etoo was all about pace and finishing. That's the sort of player Njie should aspire to becoming as he also doesn't have the skills to be a winger

I'm surprised some people are saying he's more of a wide man than CF. I think completely the opposite! Reason being that he has genuine pace but limited footballing skills (relative to a PL player), by which I mean control, passing, crossing, dribbling skills.

Therefore if he's out wide and beats his man he still needs to either put over a decent cross, play a decent pass or cut in and probably beat another player, which he isn't well set up to do. Whereas if he's playing through the middle and he beats his man for pace then he's through and doesn't need other skills - the CB wont catch him and he has scoring chance.

I really cant see him making it as a wide man - there's been some top class CF who had pace but little else, Samuel Etoo being a prime example

If you take a look at some of his compilation videos on YouTube, he is capable of putting in good balls from either flank.

I think it is a tad ridiculous to draw such concrete conclusions on his best position based on a sum total of about 3 full matches in our colours.

How do you know this? Do you have some inside track on his potential to develop? Have you seen him in training at Spurs? At his previous club? Just curious as to where this conclusion comes from.

N'Jie doesn't have skill? What about his trap, turn and cross to provide an assist for Lamela against City? That was unbelievable skill.

I think he has an abundance of raw ability that needs to be coached and harnessed in the right way, I believe Poch is the man to do this.

He could develop into a high quality and versatile forward option, playing anywhere across the front three IMO.

Can't wait for him to score his first goal, it's on the cards.

don't worry as soon as he scores a few goals or does a few clever tricks on the pitch then he will be lauded ... this is the modern "balanced view"

Same as the opinion of others who thing we have a world-beater on our hands with him - from what I've seen of him at Spurs and before. Time will tell who is right

id love it njie turns out to be like no skill just pace etoo lol ....

we have a world class player on our hands ☺

If he turns out like Eto'o I'd obviously love it too! And it would prove my original point that he's more suited to being a CF not a winger!!!

NJie reminds me of Bolassie
If Clinton can add a bit more skills to his game, I think he has the potensial to be even better than Bolasie - because his pace is frightening, and better than Bolasie.
I like what I see from him so far. Very raw, yes, but I'm very much looking forward to how he develop.

NJie reminds me of Bolassie

Without wanting to repeat the above arguments(!), I think they're quite different. Bolassie is much more skilful, Njie is quicker. Simplistically, Bolassie is more of a no 10 or wide forward, Njie is more of an out and out CF or no 9 (though I hate the way people refer to positions by numbers)

Bollasie for me is very quick and a bit headless. He is also no where near to be a number 10 as he is poor through the middle and has a really bad goal return. Im still convinced that Bolassie doesn't know what he is doing with the ball when he gets it and is a pure instinct player.

Njie looks to be best so far operating wide, with pace and has shown the odd trick

The reason I brought up the comparison was there were people clambering for us to sign Bolassie yet we signed Njie for half the cost that they would have wasted for Bolassie and he can and will be equally as effective if not a lot more

I do agree, however we both know it will not stop the " experts" from judging players.

Bedford, I find myself agreeing with each and every one of your posts!!

It is way too early to be forming a definitive view on N'Jie. I believe he has shown enough in his cameo appearances to show that there is potential to be a very good player for us because he is pacy which is not something that we have a lot of in advanced positions. I have said before that I think he is showing that he could be our Mane as they have similar traits. The difference is that Mane has proved it.

I find the talk about no 9's, false 9's, no 10s quite intriguing to be honest. From the best games that we have played this season, our front 4 have all been rotating around, so I don't think that we are looking for specialist positions in those spaces. What our forward players need is time together so that they can understand each other's movements, and runs that they are likely to make and I think we will then see exactly what Poch has in his vision. We have Kane, Eriksen and Lamela with real football intelligence to pick a pass and runners in N'Jie and Son to create the space. All of them plus Chadli can finish, but they also have bought into our style of pressing.

I think it is time to be excited.
