Christian Eriksen

He did so well defensively today pressing and closing down and winning the ball back.
He ended up with 4 interceptions and 2 tackles.
This is the type of thing Lennon got his sphincter rimmed for on here.

but isnt Eriksen better than Lennon?

This was a performance you'd expect from a player new to a team and low on confidence.
Sadly, it was not unique today.

Inexplicable.

Mate I love Eriksen but he was totally woeful all game today

Thing is, he has the talent to be THE man. Sadly, he doesn't have the mental (or physical) presence to take games like this/demand them (I don't remember him ever dominating a top 4 match). It's a big big problem I think he has to show more in both those regards.

Do you think he has the pace, acceleration and strength to be able to work in small areas of space in these tight games?

I think mentally he has it. Always seems to be annoyed if his free kicks aren't perfect. Saw him haranguing a ref after Lamela was fouled today while all the other spurs players looked the other way. Its impossible to know. We're back to judging body language looking at what we wanna see.

it is relevant. we EXPECT that of Lennon because we applaud him for his hard work and work rate.

Indeed Lennon consistently got a pass because he was seen to work hard and "because he's Spurs".
Fair enough people expect more off Eriksen but should be expect so much from a 22 year old in a huge game.

Not surprising to see him struggle a bit to make an impact early on this season. He was great in the second half of last season and is getting a lot more attention from defenders now I think. And even when he was great last season he still wasn't dominating games all the time, more popping up with individual moments of greatness.

It's up to the other players to take the pressure of Eriksen and let him grow through a slightly tougher period that was going to show up sooner or later.

make the left his primary position so he is comfortable coming infield on his stronger foot with an overlapping left back. Much harder to mark him out of a game and he overloads offensive danger zones on the pitch which is good if you are technical by nature

As it is right now i am not surprised that he is struggling when opposition can keep track of him and he doesn't have many like minded technical pass and move team mates with him

Was really happy when we were linked to Song, excatly the type of ball player we need to provide guys like erikson the ball in dangerous places...we need to get more of those guys in

One other thing.......liverpool on the flank had sterling and either allen or henderson or sturridge...i fail....sterling or sturridge can take people on and funny enough henderson and allen actually did a wonky whenever they were on the flank and were hard to keep track of.........on our side chadli and lamela can take people one on one..or at least dont do it nearly enough...so that option is out...so they also need people that a technical ball recyclers as well........chadli more than lamela as lamela seems good at moving the ball on

i actually wasnt really dissapointed too much by this game...it was always down as an examination game to see where we are short in....its glaringly obvious now...at least in comparison to liverpool and teams remotely of that ilk. Plus i dont think we actually played that bad...just that our game plan was not executed well enough and their game plan countered ours much better than vice versa.

I cant believe Brendan Rogers wonkyed us on our own turf

We have seen what Eriksen can do, quite honestly not worried bout him.

Get the other players moving/running and you create the dynamic.

Eriksen/Lamela needs one of Soldado/Lennon/Chadli/somebody to make more movement, Ade/Chadli (today)/Dembele/Townsend don't make that fluidity.

Some of the comments toward him are fairly typical of the scrutiny that number 10s are under, if they have an off day or two or appear to be not running around as much as the rest of the team, the criticism is harsher. Seems like he's subbed every time he plays badly but players like Lennon, Townsend, Sandro, Capoue, Bentaleb and Rose can stink the place up all they like and they play the full 90, I'm not just talking about today or this season btw. Look at the criticism Ozil has received, deservedly so I'd like to say but I think nearly all of us would be happy to take him from Arsenal.

I think we should look at saving Eriksen for lesser sides who come to defend, and playing higher workrate players when we face better teams. A bit like Fergie, when he'd wheel out the likes of Ji Sung Park, Welbeck etc. for games against top teams.

That just tells me that your bias towards Ade is still there.

The bit that makes me squint a bit is that you still put soldado above Ade despite clear evidence between the two over 3 different managers that Ade does more for our team overall than Solly.

slight diss on eriksen IMO. I think he can handle good competition. just not in the middle with the current crop of players at this particular moment in time of the teams chemistry and system development.

In short..either move him to his most statistically effective position, or keep him where he is now and get better technical / intelligent pass and movers, or keep everything as is and just give these group of players time to know each other like the back of their hands (which could take anything from a week to years)

eriksen is quality, current situation is just not ideal for him

To be honest, this is probably the best option for us. We keep going around and around, hiring different coaches to work with players of similar quality (with the exception of that season where Harry had Bale, Modric, VdV and Ade all firing). We may as well give one coach and one particular group of players some time, and maybe we'll get lucky and add/develop some star quality along the way.

All this coninual transition is ballix -- we've transitioned from a top 6 team under Jol in 05-06 to a top 6 team under Sherwood in 13-14. 8 years, a lot of coaches and, imo, Jol would have got 4th place with the group that Harry found himself with (that's not a slight on Harry either). Ramos was the exception, but we basically buy players of top 6 quality and get lucky every now and then with a gem -- getting extremely lucky when Harry had that bunch all together.

The only realistic way we can progress in a low-budget (relative to Chelsea, City et al), Dortmund type of way is to allow a coach and a group of players to develop into more than the sum of their parts, i.e top 6 players playing like a top 4 team. Let's hope that Poch is the man (I have faith that he is) and let's hope he is given time to get things moving his way.

To be fair if Eriksen was the real deal right now, we'd never have been able to sign him. He is clearly still developing as a player and will only get better.

Ade is the better goalscorer, soldado in my opinion adds more to the movement, big difference.

Ideal would be play both or get a ball playing midfielder to go with Eriksen/Lamela and keep Ade up front.
