Champions League 2016/17 - Group E: CSKA Moscow, Bayer Leverkusen, Monaco

Benfica
Leverkusen
Spurs
Viktoria Plzen

Although I think no game is a gimme in CL.

That's probably the easiest draw possible, but still think that Benfica and Leverkusen would be expected to finish above us. Benfica obviously have the advantage of playing in a weak league so can rest players in the league where needed to help their CL prospects

Certainly looks like there is a massive chance we will have a lot less travelling. Only CSKA from Pot 1 is a hike. None of the 6 we can get in Pot 2 are too far away. Donetsk and Kiev we cant draw, and in Pot 4 there a couple of long flights.
As far as travelling, worse case sceanrio? CSKA Moscow,Porto and Besiktas?

Based on those potential groups, from a PPOV would not mind the following:
Barcelona (just for the oppurtunity to see Spurs play the best); Leverkusen; Apoel Nicosia

The year Chelsea won the champs league they travelled less in the whole competition than we did in the group stage of Europa

As we are infrequent visitors to the CL (hopefully that's about to change) I don't really mind who we get. I actually want to see Spurs against some of the top sides and if that means we go out early so be it.
As long as we don't drop into EL. Either qualify for the knockout phase, or fudge it and finish fourth.

I take your point but I don't mind the EL. I like watching Spurs play (mostly) so the more the merrier. Even if it is just the kids running out I'll watch it.

I was watching the final last night and all I could think was that we are better than both of these teams. A stronger squad next season and we should be in a better place to compete on multiple fronts. Success breeds success.

I too love watching us play, even if it's the U13s! The more Spurs matches the better. But I do want to see us win something next season, preferably the league, and EL will be a hindrance. I don't think we'll have enough options to compete on both the league and EL/PL fronts next year. 2-3 years from now that's a different story.

Thank GHod there are some others who think the same as me, I was envious of the scouse supporters the other night, a European final would be a brilliant few days out.

Looking at the list of teams on the previous page, I'd be disappointed if we came 4th in our group but also I think we'd need to play very well to come in the top 2 and qualify.

I agree with you about the EL though - for where we are (in terms of development and growth), I think its far more important to qualify for the CL via a top4 finish next year than it is to get to say the EL quarters or semis

the easiest draw possible
CSKA/Benfica
Napoli/Porto/Leverkusen
Apoel/Celtic

from a group like this, we should go through to the knockout phase.

Barcelona (just for the oppurtunity to see Spurs play the best)
This + I want Barcelona from a selfish reason. Probably the only chance for members to get a ticket for our away game. At least in the home end as in Madrid in 2011.

Would we get nearly 15k tickets for that?

I do sometimes get the impression from some Spurs fans, especially those with their constant bitching droning, that they would rather go deep in cup competitions than do well in the league. Like they would rather have had Liverpool's season than ours, Crystal Palace's maybe too?

I want the knock-out trophies too but for me the PL is everything.

1). PL
2). CL
3). FA
4). LC

It would be great, but I don't think so.

I have checked this season attendances: v Leverkusen 69k, v Roma 72k, v L'Arse 76k (I can't find information how many tickets L'Arse got) and v Atletico 89k . So there can be many tickets available, but . . .

With all due respect that's a pretty arrogant view.
Napoli - 2nd in Serie A
Leverkusen - 3rd in Bundesliga
Benfica - Portuguese Champions
CSKA - Russian Champions
Porto - 3rd in a Portugal

I think to say that we should qualify from a group with those sort of teams is an over-statement. It represents our best chance but I don't think we are any better than most of those, pretty much all of them have a lot more European experience than us and we have a tough domestic league which means we wont be able to rest players ahead of CL games

Home clubs must make at least 5% of the total approved UEFA capacity of their stadium available exclusively to visiting supporters, in a segregated, safe area. In addition, visiting clubs are entitled to purchase 200 top-category tickets (unless otherwise agreed by the two clubs in question) for their VIP supporters, sponsors, V – Match Organisation 35 etc.

That would be 4,968 plus at least 200 VIPs.

Under those circumstances I wouldn't mind it.

Poch should probably stay at home too though, so it doesn't interfere with training sessions.

There is still the smallest chance we could end up in Pot 2.

City, Porto and Shakhtar would all need to fall at the qualifiers...unlikely but who knows.

Had we taken the Europa a bit more seriously we wouldn't be behind the likes of Basel and Shakhtar so only ourselves to blame.

Having said that I want to see us against some of Europes best.

I missed Madrid last time out due to work and have always vowed I'd only go to Barca when Spurs play there so not really bothered who we draw.

Typically the new CL seedlings for Pot 1 have screwed us with Leicester and CSKA!

The 2nd round is drawn before the 1st one is played, so the winner of each tie goes into the pot with coefficient of the seeded team. If a bricky side knocks out TNS there is a chance they could be seeded in the next round.
