Champions League 2016/17 - Group E: CSKA Moscow, Bayer Leverkusen, Monaco

It is really strange that our qualification to the CL has been largely overshadowed by our league title race. Our main target at the start of the season was a top 4 finish to qualify to the CL. But somehow we end up in the title race, making us forget about the CL qualification. We failed in the title race but ended up qualifying for the CL in the process. Remember, this is only the second time that we have qualified to the CL in our history. We should be celebrating it wildly like we did in 2010. But somehow, the failure in the league prevents us from doing so. Really wish we had celebrated the CL qualification at the end of the Chelsea match just to tinkle them off !

"It is better to fail aiming high than to succeed aiming low. And we of Spurs have
set our sights very high, so high in fact that even failure will have in it an echo of glory."

Lyon beat Monaco 6-1 to secure the second direct qualifying spot from France. Monaco must now beat Montpellier to secure a spot in the qualifying rounds.

Villarreal have secured 4th place in Spain.

Ajax lost the league on the final day as the could only get a 1-1 draw at already relegated De Graafschap.

In Belgium they're having some weird playoff, but it looks like it will be Club Brugge and Anderlecht.

CL seeding as it stands using the highest seeds, but probably not 100% accurate:

Pot 1:
CL winner
Barcelona
Bayern
Leicester
Juventus
Benfica
PSG

CSKA Moscow

Pot 2:
Real Madrid
Atletico Madrid
(one of these two will be in pot 1)
Dortmund
Arsenal
Emirates Marketing Project*
EL winner (if Sevilla wins, Liverpool are currently just below PSV)
Porto*
Napoli
Leverkusen

Pot 3:
Basel
Donetsk*
Tottenham
Olympiakos*
Dinamo Kiev
Lyon

Villarreal*
Ajax*

Pot 4:
PSV
Sporting

Viktoria Plzen*
Club Brugge
Salzburg*
Celtic*
APOEL Nicosia*

Besiktas

The bold ones are guaranteed a place in the group stage.

The ones with an * would have to go through qualifying rounds.

Other teams that could/will be involved in the qualifying rounds:

Non-champions (oh the irony): Anderlecht, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Roma, Fenerbache, Sparta Praha, Steaua Bucuresti, Monaco, Dinamo Zagreb, Young Boys, Panathinaikos, FC Rostov

Champions: BATE Borisov, Legia Warzawa, Ludogorets, FC København, Rosenborg, Astra Giurgiu, Crvena Zvezda, IFK Norrköping, Ferencvaros

Teams with higher coefficient that could still qualify: Zenit (2 points off a CL spot with 3 games to go, Sevilla (as EL winners), Manchester United (at the expense of City, so no biggie)

If the CL winner also win their domestic league, the Ukrainian champions (Dynamo Kiev) will move into pot 1.

So looks like the only way we could squeeze into Pot 2 is if Porto and Donetsk lose in the qualifiers and Liverpool win the EL.....Pot 3 will do fine in that case!

So thats Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Besiktas then.

Pot 4 has the best away days IMO. Lisbon, Brugge, Salzburg, Plzen (home of the pilsner). Hoping for one of the nordic sides to make it through.

Based on the as it stands position ... in order to reach Pot 2 we'd need a combination of the following:
(a) CL winner NOT to win La Liga
(b) Liverpool to win EL
(c) There are 3 higher ranked teams in the play-offs (Emirates Marketing Project, Porto & Shakhtar). If both (a) and (b) occur we'd need 2 of the 3 to lose. If only 1 of the above occurs we'd need all of them to fail to reach the group stage.

The teams for the first qualifying round are more less known.

Seeded:

The New Saints (WAL)
Valletta FC (MAL)
Flora Tallinn (EST)
FC Santa Coloma (AND)

Unseeded:

B36 Torshavn (FAR)
Lincoln Red Imps (GIB)
Aleshkert FC (ARM)

The final team will come from San Marino, where they're currently having a championship playoff.

Aleshkert are 9 points ahead of second placed Shirak with 3 games to go. Though they meet in the final round it shouldn't come down to that game.

Would it make a difference if Bassong wasn't suspended?
