Brennan Johnson

These are the decisions that have cost us as much as the ones by Romero at the other end

We’ve been so spoilt by having a world class CF to rely upon for the past decade, if Kane had been in that position he probably would’ve adjusted his position to hit it first time or in the unlikely event of a poor first touch he would’ve already assessed what’s around him when the ball was on its way and played in Johnson.

Hopefully it’s just a lack of match sharpness plus getting used to the new teammates and next time Solanke is presented with such a gift he’ll make it count.

As mentioned in the match thread, he is a frustration at the moment, he clearly has the ability, but hes either low on confidence or playing to bizarre instructions.

I just want to see him attack the space when he has it or try and take on a player with pace, not take the easy option of passing it back, maybe he needs a bit of the Bale treatment in training to toughen him up?

All our wingers seem to take the easier option

When he has the space we don’t pass it to him. We’re shockingly bad at passing quickly
Not that your gonna waste time and watch the game back but our two fast attacks after the first 10 minutes came when using him quickly
There was a cross around 37 minutes that was blocked by the third defender and the shot late in the half that went over.
He has limitations but we make them look much worse, like son, by passing to them slowly when they are the marked. It’s nuts

I don't disagree, it was the same last year, point blank refusing to pass it to Werner in space

But he does get it in space and times and he needs to make better choices.

He always stays wide so he has space
Personally I’d slate him if he gets the ball when he is free and doesn’t attack his man
But it’s been a consistent gripe of mine, the speed in which we give our fastest players the ball is pedestrian. I could mark them at that speed
We have completely stopped making first time passes and one touch football. Some players are poor at it, but that’s fine
Should at least try it more though

I know we are not attacking anywhere near as quickly as the start of last season (Probably not helped by teams figuring us out and sitting deeper), But there was still plenty of chances for Johnson to run at his man 1v1. I just don't think he's that good at beating a full back with any real skill alone so is a bit reluctant to try it. He prefers the through ball and to pass and move around the defence, That's fine if that is what he is but it relies on our passing being on point to get the best out of him. As opposed to someone like Odobert who will take any opportunity to try and go at the full back, Only taking the easy option when doubled up on. Johnson doesn't have a decent left foot to cut in and shoot and his crossing is hardly Perisic levels, His strength is his movement, Stretching the defence, and getting in those dangerous positions to get on the end of things.

Hold up. Johnson doesnt have the ability to beat a man one on one. He has the ability to outrun but not to dribble. He is solid for a counter attacking team but of all our first team wingers, he is the one with the least ball skills to beat his opponent one on one.
he does but he is only one trick that is a slight feint and a burst of speed. rather predictable still.
its on the coach to maximise the strengths of his players.
can't fault johnson when we hired him knowing his capabilities
