Ben Davies

Another hamstring gone

Imagine our surprise as an ageing player is asked to play twice per week and sprint up and down and lunge into desperate challenges 20 times per match... suffers a hamstring injury.

What. A. Surprise. This is great man management and great tactics.

If only we had someone else in the squad who could’ve played as LWB against €iteh in the Carabao Cup so that van de Ven didn’t twang his hamstring ahead of the busiest part of the season.

You mean like an experienced 27 year old specialist LB, who even has 6 caps for one of the best international teams in the world. A current member of Anges squad.

This is Davies games missed over the last 3 seasons:

24/25 - 7 and counting
23/24 - 11 games
22/23 - 13 games

It's a lot when you think about it. He has had hamstring problems in 4 consecutive seasons.

In my opinion, we'd be mad to offer him a contract extension.

the best defenders mark space first so that they don't have to get involved much.
ben is very predictable and invites pressure on himself and the team a lot. yeah he may clear lots of them but i certainly prefer grey for his ability side step a or commit a player so that his pass can be comfortably received without pressure
He is and always has been a far better player then some fans think. IMO

Was great today.

I feel guilty for panning Ben for most of his career with us. But now...a mature squad player. He's deeply appreciated. So long as he is not playing all season, he is a model pro. And he does play at an elite level for short periods. He can up his game and give it all. But over more than about 5 games, the cracks appear.

Just impressed with his cameos. Loyal servant too.

I think Ben knows his strengths and importantly weaknesses at this point of his career. In the early exchanges of the game it was Ben that was being charged down by the Brentford forwards. Like we've seen many times, they know he's not the best technician with the ball. His mature response was to start moving the ball on quicker and just kept it all amazingly simple. No doubt, he couldn't have done that with previous midfields as he wouldn't have had the double pivot around him so much. I think one area where he's improved is his heading. Not sure he's even 6 foot but his timing has massively improved.

Like you, I'm not always his biggest fan. I've noticed that some games suit him but some definitely don't. Today's was one of those that did whereas his Leicester performance was shaky. I'm glad he's finally being judged as a centre half though, and not getting free passes for being a "makeshift".

This last bit is a good point - CB actually suits him better. And credit to Ange here. He was never good enough going forward. But was always a resolute defender.

Glad we have him. A big asset to our squad. And performances like today - he really can play at a top level.
