American politics

I don't agree with the leftist bit because tbh both sides are playing that game, albeit for different reasons.
But at some point there has to be realisation that there is no easy answer here, no matter what you do there is going to be misery and suffering.
Understanding and finding the route that minimises the suffering is the key.
Intially some will still suffer, some will lose some freedoms, but it can get better in time.
Its not going to happen overnight, it probably won't be a fun ride, but it needs to be done.
But even if you ignore the plight of the non taliban Afghani people, ultimately you are allowing a rogue regime to reinstall itself, strengthen and pose a threat to the stability of the region. I agree the solutions are not straight forward but to walk away from a situation we have at least some culpability for seems completely irresponsible.

Totally agree.
The truth, sad as it is, is that the whole region has become a political football.
A blame game and chance to point fingers.
There's too many making too much financially and politically to really want it to end.

5000 Taliban and Islamic state prisoners are being set free after the Afghan government troops concede control of the Bagram airbase prison. What a mess.

And that is on top of the 5k prisoners that Trump/Pompeo released last year to help his failing presidential campaign. A mess indeed but not one that was created in the last few weeks. This has been 20 years in the making and is the child of many fathers.

Indeed. But a mess expedited at lightning speed by this withdrawal.

I think the speed at which things have unfolded has caught everyone by surprise. It shouldn't have, but that seems to be the case across the board. Actually there has been very little fighting by all accounts, and the after-the-fact analysis by some 'experts' is pointing out that it might have played out exactly like this irrespective of the manner of the withdrawal. I'm not convinced about that but maybe they are right. Personally, I think a more protracted withdrawal would have allowed more people to get out if they needed to.

I'm watching some absolutely heartbreaking vids coming out of Kabul now. The international community really needs to step up for the refugees.

Refugees you say? If they turn up on our military planes and not boats in Kent I'm sure they'll be welcomed with open arms
