I also think it will be Maddison, but I share concerns about the number of games he's likely to miss through injury or lack of fitness. I don't think there are any obvious candidates who've got the kind of x-factor I'd be looking for in my on-field general if I were the manager, but if pushed, I'd probably give it to Conor Gallagher over Porro. He was good enough for Pochettino, and Gray, though probably one for the future, isn't yet ready for the role IMO.
 
Voted for Porro... captain needs to be an ideally outfield player who is the first on the team sheet, be passionate on the club and lead by example.

Pedro is the only player I can see who fits all the criteria.

I'm mostly going by a couple of data points.

RDZ gave him the armband at the end of the season and spoke highly of him.
VDV felt compelled to set Ange straight on his dubious defensive tactics. That showed character from a 23 year old.

It's a good point. Do all clubs have these leadership groups that we've read about at Spurs?

In some ways it might just confuse things and even undermine the captain and vice who are the natural leadership group anyway.

It only started at Spurs under Ange I believe, as it was his philosophy to allow the players to own the Dressing Room. With enough strong leaders in the group that will work but given we have a dearth now we have lost Son and Romero, does it still work for us in the current moment?

I guess it depends how formal you define it. E.g. I can't believe Poch didn't harness the characters of Kane, Vertonghen, Dier and Son, in addition to Lloris.

Part of it might be to do with having to manage squads of approaching 30 these days, compared to the 16 or 17 there were in the two substitute days. You need more middle managers in effect.

Personally not a fan of bureaucratic bloating as it can add unnecessary complexity to decision making and can be a marker of weak and directionless leadership at the top.

Applying that to our beloved Spurs, I see RDZ as having a very clear direction in what he demands from his players, day in and day out. Whereas Ange was very hands off, RDZ is the opposite which probably means each player is clear on what is expected of them leading to there being no need for a more democratic leadership among the squad.
