Who should be captain?

Unfortunately none of our players seem to meet this very basic characteristic for being a successful captain. Maybe we should be grateful for that. On the other hand to have a c**t as captain to lead us to success, should we be prepared to contemplate that?

My vote goes to Bale. Best player, maturing, committed to the club, ticks all the boxes for me.
 
I think the captain position is given way too much importance in football. The captain doesn't need to made key decisions like in cricket and rugby.

The important thing is to have fit and in form players on the pitch with a few leaders among them. Having one player who is picked or is less likely to be substituted potentially harms the team. Premier League clubs tend to have several players with captaincy experience at other clubs or at international level so just pick one on a game to game basis. Players with leadership ability will provide leadership even if not the nominal captain. And for media appearances other criteria are needed so pick according to need.

The same goes for England. More often than not it leads to media nonsense (Beckham, Terry, etc) and it cost us Champions League football. The fuss over Terry and the decision to delay the proceedings of the English legal system until it was convenient for Chelsea players led to Capello's resignation and its fallout.

I wouldn't completely disagree, but firstly, the captain role can sit heavily on people and actually ruin some players games. Conversely, it can actually raise other players games as they seem to find another gear.

In addition, you always need to have a motivator on the pitch, someone who'll remind you when you're going onto cruise control or losing focus. From that point of view, I think a captain is very important as you need leaders to keep yourselves sharp and keep the tempo going.

pros and cons both ways, and the team copes with/without a leader.

however if you are lucky enough a strong player whose leadership can rally a team to come behind to win games, you'd certainly want him made captain. the team would too.
 
If Gallas is fit Dawson is 5th choice CB for me, and the most unversatile. Not that he's a bad player by any stretch but I think it'll take him a while to get back to full form after being out for the greater part of two seasons. I think we'll see him play a fair bit as there'll always be injuries and such but not enough to be given captaincy.
