I assume it only covers transfer outgoings, as I’m sure ManUre would be far higher up the list if wages were taken into account but tabloids don’t seem to like besmirching Fergie’s reputation as a genius by mentioning that ManUre paid by far the highest wages in England (until Chavski won the lottery) which allowed them to cherry pick the best players from rival teams in the same way that Bayern Munich still do.

That's because transfer prices rocketed at the same time United were feeding the Glazer family. All United's spending in the 90s appears minor now because of inflation. They should adjust the spending to account for transfer fee inflation or the cumulative figure is meaningless.
That's true, they broke a lot of transfer records in Fergie's time. Roy Keane was a British transfer record and it was only just over £3m iirc. Not much, but it'd be like an £80m signing today.

Indeed, ManUre regularly set transfer records during the 1990s when they used their financial might to cherry pick the best British players from rival clubs and 5 of the top 10 highest transfer fees paid (when adjusted for inflation) are theirs.
So whilst Chavski and Emirates Marketing Project winning the lottery is frustrating for us, one silver lining is that it’s stopped ManUre from dominating English football, as Bayern do in Germany, and continuing to use us as a feeder club...
Carrick is the 18th biggest fee at £90.2m in today’s money whilst Berbatov is the 24th biggest fee at £79.3m. Tottenham’s only entry in the Top 50 is Les Ferdinand in 48th spot with £63.3m.

In fairness even from 95-2002 Utd didn’t have the highest net spend in the PL. (Appreciate this doesn’t cover wages though)
Edit: Also appreciate that he spent big in the late 80s / early 90s
