What do you buy your Dad for his Birthday?

Spursman

Neil Sullivan
I am struggling to find a gift for my Dad for his Birthday. He is in his late 70s and he always says he doesn't want anything (he does really lol)

In the past we have got him an Ipad, aftershave, trainers, CDs.

I just dont know what to get him this year. He has had a major op so isn't ready to start venturing out.

Just looking for some ideas really.

Yeh I struggle in a big way. I got my dad a DVDs sporting moments, Spurs, England Cricket, the Lions etc

What about vinyl?

My Dad's always impressed by what I can get hold of for him. Things from his era he could never get/afford. He's just never discovered Discogs!

Or a new turntable to play his old vinyl on (but don't forget most modern ones need separate amps and may need different speakers)

Separately, this series is really good and is about right for people of that generation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Look_at_Life_(film_series)

I'm just a bit younger than your Dad and have the same problem when asked what I want. With time on my hands I like to read or do something in the garden so that's what I ask for, my daughter always tries to get me some old sweets I liked as a kid.

Thanks for suggestions, Dad has LOOOOOADS of Vinyl, actually need to see what hes got and look to sell them on.
Dad also has loads of books, he loves health books (should have been a Doctor in another life)

We used to have a menswear shop so got loads of clothes, he only wears one watch and wont wear anything else.

its a struggle

I used to buy my dad a decent bottle of Port every year, because that's what he told me he liked/wanted. He passed away unexpectedly (aged 74) nearly 2 years ago, and when I was helping my mum clear out their house, there were about 4-5 bottles of untouched Port there. Made me feel a bit sad. So yeah, that's literally no help whatsoever, is it. Sorry.

Blimey, I haven't bought my dad a present for decades, in fact I can't remember ever buying him anything.

I'm sure he would most like to see you / spend time with you, rather than get some £20 present.

He can buy himself anything he wants, apart from time with you.

Arrange to go and see / do something he enjoys together, day trip.

I told my mother that my presence is a present last Mother's day.

She told me I was a lazy fudger for not going to buy her something.

He appreciated it :) He was making it easy for you. Don't feel sad :)

My old man has been seriously ill for a number of months. I think the best you can do is spend time with them. Listen to the old stories etc.

An old iPhone was a good present for my dad. He got into his apps and made good use of it.

If he likes reading, you could pay for an annual subscription to a monthly journal, specialist magazine etc that he might enjoy but would not normally come across.
Does he like films? You mentioned you had bought him an iPad previously - maybe a Netflix subscription.
Or a box set of his favourite tv show, or DVD of a favourite film.

He's just had a major op so isnt up for going out yet, suppose i could arrange for something in a a couple of months time.

What about an antiquarian or folio edition of Gray's Anatomy

Don't know where you live but for Fathers Day I once took my Dad for a tour of Wembley Stadium in the morning, hopped on the Tube, pub lunch in St John's Wood and then a tour of Lords in the afternoon. He loved it, full day, quality time just me and him.

Or Twickenham or Wimbledon etc depending on your Dad's sporting preferences?

Got my dad some wireless headphones a couple of years back. He uses them occasionally which makes a difference from any other presents we've ever got him.

Means he can walk around/lie in bed while listening to the radio and can help if he's going a bit deaf.

Thanks I'll add that to my Christmas list.

Good idea but he's not a sporting man. Plus he's recovering from a major op
