Transfer Window Thread

lol i like the quality knee jerk reaction there.
in his prime, possibly cheap, experienced in the epl, another discussion point with arsenal fans....

Not if the wage claims are to be believed.

We are not in the market for 28 year old players, on big wages, with a two year shelf life.

Why didn’t we buy him?
Because we couldn’t bid for anybody, superstar or not!

We did bid for him. Villa were bought out this summer and the new owners wouldn't sell.

But you are making a different point to the one I was responding to which was about why Poch requires a certain type of player.

Because we don't have the budget for superstars. That means to match the clubs with a bigger budget we have to have a better team game and the number of players suited to that are limited.

It really doesn’t fly that there is just a limited pool of players in world football (3/4 from reports) that can improve us.

I personally think it’s a
Weakness he can only work with certain players

Our players need to buy into his philosophy. Buying players that won't put in the necessary effort or do what's asked of them would be a waste of money.

We put in our normal derisory low bid then low and behold bid properly and it was too late because fill in reason here,

Im a big big fan of Levy and think he has been doing things for all the right reasons but sadly I think he is going suffer from timing and the increasing lack of financial wiggle room. The financial climate has not been as kind as could have been.

The trouble is ‘with it’ we may not also.
I just am not sure ‘the stadium won’t effect transfers’ is now due to unfortunate events turned into ‘events in financial markets it has killed our transfer budget for some time to come’.
You pays your money and rolls the dice. My question was were we financial ready to play the game?
Running before we could walk?

We can walk. We can either stick with that and get left behind or try to keep up with the biggest clubs. I'd be very surprised if we end up worse off than we would have been staying at the old WHL. That place needed some serious investment if we were going to continue using it.

Yes we could ‘walk’ back in 2016, but things have transpired against us in and outside of football since.
My fear is back then we set our financial wiggle room to tight and our current transfer inactivity is proving this.
I honestly believe back in 2016/17 season the stadium was NOT going to impact our transfers. A year on we no what happened.

All managers have players that are better suited to their style than others.

And of course there are certain players who would not be willing to put in the effort or be team minded enough to be a good fit for a Poch team. We can see what is required by how it takes most new signings a while to play at their best under him. It takes a while to learn the system and find your place in it.

How much did we bid? I missed the amount being made public.

First bid was rumoured to be 2 bob and bag of chips
The last after the takeover was rumoured to be £25m ish

Grealish is just one example regarding an individual player.

It was confirmed to Sky by people at Villa (and this wasn’t a Sky News report but a conversation before a Villa game they were covering) that Spurs opening offer was 2million plus Onomah. You can claim they are just making that up, but we all know that is likely true....

Steve Bruce had previously said Villa should "break the bank" to buy Onomah.
So offering Onomah plus £2m was not necessarily as derisory as some think - for an opening bid. Bruce had already implied he put a high value on Onomah. Naive from a negotiation standpoint, but enough to give Levy the option of a "creative" opening offer.

There are still some fans who will not accept or believe that we were told that no bids would be accepted by Villa until the new owners took charge, the new owners told Villa that they would talk transfers until the take over was completed. So all this flimflam about us going in early with low offers is just gonads ( but i guess it suits some to ignore that).

How do we know anything printed in the press?
It’s probably all made up by clubs and agents and we pick the bits to fit our mood or feeling on any given event!
The only thing we know is we did not sign a player.
I don’t truly believe we seriously bid for Grealish or any player this summer.

Anyone still hoping we nick Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham? They look miles out of their depth and already putting up a relegation quality GD. Got a stadium reno to pay for, too. Haven't seen a lot of him this year. Any thoughts?

And not buying Grealish for a ridiculous amount looks to have been a smart move. By all accounts, he's not playing badly for AV, but if they continue to wallow - a 2-1 loss to struggling Millwall yesterday - they will not be able to hang onto him.
