Transfer speculation

Prioritising the league. Unless you mean all EPL teams?

EDIT. All EPL teams have been prioritising the league - doesn't it pay so much more than CL?

And is a much more competitive tournament

The premier league does you no favours with champions league

Other counties even move games to favour their sides

Premier league is a far harder league. Innit!
Chelsea will find the two big competitions very draining this season.

English based teams need huge squads with outstanding quality to solve their CL problem.

You amost need two first teams

The premier league is the most competitive in the world bar none at this level

Teams like Madrid and Bayern can walk their leagues to a degree as the standard is that much lower

I went to Hamburg vs Bayern last season and it was bloody entertaining but at no point did Hamburg ever look like scoring.... the worse team in the league last year in Sunderland did a number in us at their ground. Those games and results IMO just don't happen in other leagues.... so teams can actually make changes for the champions league games.

I'm not saying that our teams are as good as Barca, Madrid, atletico, Bayern or last seasons Monaco, but we have plenty of teams that are genuinely better than the rest - hence why leiecetr did what they did by focussing on it which showed up in their league results

So i ask again, if we have the best Lge around with the best clubs why do we fail so many times in the CL over the last several years.

Because no one has a squad that can compete in both competitions and thennig clubs focus on remaining in it... even Chelsea have had to balance the books with their dodgy sales

Madrid didn't change their first team much last season in the champions league. They rested players in the league games. They also had games brought forward to give them extra time.... in England you could play on Monday and in ECL on the Wednesday if sky wanted it

Cup competitions aren't really the best measure of quality, especially in europe when there are many variables as you're competing against sides from other leagues which all have their own differences - I think the PL has more teams in with a chance of winning it then any other of the strong European leagues which means you have to give the league full attention, that isn't the case in Spain Italy or Germany for their CL teams. Rewind a few years when England were doing better in the CL and you'll see domestically it was often a two horse race in the league before a ball had been kicked and a well established top 4

That's my point

You can predict the top 3 of other leagues now...

Wouldn't be easy for the prem based in the last 3 seasons

So how you explain our poor performances over the last few years in the CL?
It really has a lot to do with the league being equally, if not more important for EPL teams, as opposed to other leagues where CL is by far the higher priority. Also, in other leagues the teams that play CL are much better accommodated by their respective FAs than their EPL counterparts. And add to all this that the EPL is much more competitive (there are no gimme games to rest players, even if you're playing the bottom team). So an EPL team has much more of a balancing act between league and CL than other European teams do.

I'm not saying the above are the only reason, but they are major disadvantages that handicap English teams in the CL.

EDIT: Just saw that a bunch of folks made the same points. I'll read till the end next time before posting.

Best league does not = best individual top sides

i.e. RM/Barca are the best sides in Spain (lets say we gave them a rating of 9/10 in quality), perhaps we give the best English Clubs a 7/10, the clubs below 10th in Spain are probably a 3/10, while in England it's still a 5/10. So overall the PL has less disparity (and the tv income money and how its shared, which is different in EPL vs. Spain as e.g.) and is a more difficult league. Playing 38 tough games in a league where the FA gives fudge all about helping your schedule for big competitions is inevitably harder than playing your B team (look at Madrid in 2nd half of season) for half of your games and having your FA accommodate your cup schedule.

English clubs should do better in Europe, but they do have disadvantages, however both Spurs (& Leicester) have shown with runs in CL that even the non-elite in England can win in Europe.

We don't win the CL as there are 4 (maybe 5) teams that are better.

We don't win the europa as we prioritise the league, last two years a couple of English teams only had el to bother with and one finalist and a winner.

Can we get back to transfer talk

West brom close to signing Jay Rodriguez for 14 mill.......I know he has had bad injuries and hasn't shown his previous form but I wonder if Poch should consider signing him especially at that price. Would be a good squad addition who can play off the left and centrally.

His game was built on pace and it seems that the injury has curtailed that, it's a shame because he was really exciting

All this talk of which is the best league is tedious. You will never convince anyone from any country that their league isn't the best.

EPL is one of the top leagues so leave it at that.

Of that there is no dispute, but i am obviously in the minority here when i say our Lge is over rated so i will leave it there and get back to transfer talk. :)

What he said. Another thing is that competiveness isn't the same as quality. The PL is more competitive than the other top leagues, in that the teams are more evenly matched, but that isn't necessarily a proof of quality. As an example I can take the Norwegian league now. It's very even, and no team seems to be able to string together two wins in a row, but the quality is brick! 10-15 years ago, Rosenborg walked the league every year, but they were regulars in the CL, so the quality was much better at the top.

Overrated for what?
Its not the most skilfull!
But by country mile it's the most entertaining!

I watch every major league in Europe (sad I agree) and as a competition it cannot be equaled!:p
