Transfer Rumour Thread

He'a not a 'like for like' for Kane in size and aerial presence, but carrying the ball, coming deep, age, style and tenacity even he's not so dissimilar.

Agree that he's not like for like for Kane in terms of size and aerial ability, but we really don't use Kane like that so much. We need a CF who works hard, can come deep but also run the channels.....I think he'd fit in well

Put it like that and he is perfect. After you've flagged it up, they are actually quite similar (and born within a week of each other by coincidence). I've almost gone to the opposite point of view: Berahino might be too similar to Kane. If we need to change things up in a game when we can't break through, is Berahino too similar? I guess he is quicker, smaller and faster feet? Berahino's hardly getting a game for wbrom so you'd think they would be able to get a deal done.

One other positive is Berahino should be fresh, if a little off the pace.

To be honest I haven't watched a lot of him but doesn't strike me as that similar? He looks quicker, more mobile as more slightly built etc so could be a good combo....

I can't see the similarities myself

Quick snap shots from outside the box. Check. Watch both Kane and Berahino and there are similarities here, they shoot early and have a strong long range shot, and they both score a fair few goals in this way. Like all strikers they will also score from within the box - Berahino actually scores a few headers and he isn't tiny - 180 cms vs Kane's 188. Is Berahino quicker over the first few yards than Kane? Probably. But Kane also plays off the last man too timing his runs.

Both like to turn and face goal, run at defenders and get an early shot off if they can. Beriahino if anything can turn quicker than Kane and maybe passes the ball into the net more. But its their tenacity that is most similar, both ready to have snap shots, hit shots first time, and they are both applied, grounded professionals - not something all players of that age (just 22) have leading the line.

They don't look alike, but they score similar goals and are not that different if you analyse it.

They have both spent a fair bit of time playing deeper, so it is not a surprise that they are both happy shooting from distance. I still don't think that there are that many similarities in their game or that it would be a hindrance if we were to sign him.

Not a hindrance no. There are more mercurial players like a VDV, players who can do something when you least expect it. Berahino and Kane are not that kind of player. But you know you will get 100% each game and what their game is. As a side we do need the VDV or Berbatov tyoe 'mercurial' players to unlock teams. But Son and Eriksen (Lamela) are those kind of players. Maybe Poch could do more to unleash that side of their game. We are a work hard first team, but it would be great to see Son and Eriksen expressing themselves, something that will come. Son already showing signs - lovely give and go against Chelsea springs to mind.

So you would like us to sign Berahino?

I'm happy to sign whoever Poch and Mitchell think can do a job for us

Personally I think Berahino ticks a lot of boxes in terms of type of player we go for, type of player we need and is young enough for Poch to improve him more.

He's also close to the limit of player who we can realistically attract - any better and there's the risk that players wont join because they think they deserve to be playing for regular CL teams. Maybe in the summer we could attract better if we finish top 4, but firstly, I think that's doubtful and secondly, the need is more urgent than that

Reading between the lines, not your first choice, but if Poch thinks he's the right guy so be it. From what Poch said last summer, I think it is clear he did want Berahino. Whether he is now open to a more physical presence player or an older player, or whether Levy has told them the deal is dead...we don't know. United my swoop and sign the kid. What I do know is Berahino has the attributes to fit in well here, it may take him time to establish himself, but he could become a very good player.

I don't have a first choice. If Poch thinks that a player can do a job and the price is reasonable, I am happy

What does Berahino bring that Son doesn't already?

IMO they are very similar, except Son is a calibre above.

Also, having done some 'scouting' of my own, perhaps we could do worse than go for Inaki Williams next month if we can't wriggle Berahino out of West Brom's clutches (assuming we'll try again, of course). 6'1, reasonably strong, astonishingly quick wing-forward for Atlhetic Bilbao, with a really good first touch to boot. Also possesses a great work rate, if the words of his coaches (sourced via google translate) and general descriptions of his play style are accurate. Looks a bit thin and may need to bulk up, but he actually seems to fit the bill as far a convertible wing-forward/center-forward rotation option is concerned: in fact, given his height, I'd say he'd be a better option than Berahino up top if we're looking for someone to bring it down and hold up play.

Best part is, apparently his contract only runs until 2017, and has a 20 million-euro buyout clause: Athletic are trying desperately to get him to sign a new one (with a 40 million euro clause, apparently), but if his contract situation's still in progress come January, 14.5 million quid (or thereabouts) should be enough to trigger his release clause and allow us to speak to the lad. I'd suggest that doing so would be cheaper than Berahino in any eventuality.

Inaki Williams is the tits.

Have you ever seen Berahino play CF, other than in a 4-4-2?

I've certainly seen Son play CF more times (not many) than I have Berahino.

Berahino is a WF, just like Son, Njie, Chadli and Lamela

He really isn't GB, you could make the argument that he and N'Jie are similar in that they have primarily played as part of a two and like to drift wide but that doesn't make him a WF - in fact it's kinda like the pundits who say Kane would be better as a 10 as he doesn't display 'traditional CF traits', which we all know is a load of cobblers and something you yourself are quick to pour scorn on for being old fashioned
