Toby Alderweireld

As I understand it, TA said he would sign a contract on certain terms, which MP then commended to DL. At the last moment, TA rejected the offer and held out his bowl for double the quantity of gruel. The crime wasn't so much the greed as the perceived disrespect, as the whole incident made MP look silly, which you can't do to a man who takes himself so very seriously. Toby's advisor in all this was, IIRC, his dad, making a repudiation and new management unlikely.

But if you offer me a contract and I say I am going to sign it and then I change my name well that is my prerogative and in this case it is Toby's prerogative. And there is no evidence to suggest that he asked for "double". And in his defense prior to his injury most Spurs fans and pundits alike were of the opinion that he was the best central defender in the country, that being the case I am not gonna blame if he feels he is worth that much.

And - again, as I understand it - TA is now making noises to the effect that the originally mooted deal might be acceptable after all. This is all hearsay, of course, spread by braggarts and fantasists of various stripes, so I don't claim that any of it is accurate.

And in answer to your initial question, this is where we are.

Indeed. I don't disagree with any of that. I'm bemoaning the situation and wishing that the club was rather more pragmatic.

So, do you think Toby was effectively "dropped" from the team last season because Poch felt disrespected, or do you honestly believe it was because he was not fit?

It may not be quite that binary. We know from the Balague book that Poch has personal and quite odd theories about players' mental fitness to play. He's not a rationalist. It's perfectly plausible that if Poch has the hump with someone he convinces himself that their aura is out of whack and sticks them on the bench. Which would be a 50/50 answer to your question.

Well, we know he is fit now anyway

Some itk posted on Spurs community this morning -

ali z on toby (not) staying: No chance more to it than money, Poch is right on this from what I hear and I suspect if you knew the reasons behind it most of you would very quickly turn against him, not trying to tease but can't reveal what I do know as it would be clear where it came from. No firm bid yet but hopefully and say that whilst ruing the fact he is so good.

More ‘quality’ eyeteekay this morning, just ensuring both bases are covered ready for the situation to go one of the only two ways possible:

Thread starter #1
Who: Ali Z
When: 22nd July
Where: COYS

ali z on toby: Only wants to stay as nobody wants to pay him what he thinks his worth, in addition he needs a change of attitude if he does stay as he acted very disrespectful to Poch, not over finances but can't/won't reveal unless he goes. He did not act professionally and if it was me there would be no way back but I am not Poch

Leaving aside the rights and wrongs of the situation it should be remembered that shortly after Toby was recalled following injury last season he had a bit of a mare against Rochdale in an FA Cup tie, culminating in him gifting the equaliser to the struggling League 1 outfit with an uncharacteristically weak header that fell straight into the path of their scorer.

Sounds brutal given his excellent form prior to injuring his hamstring against RM but maybe Poch was right to use him so sparingly after that Rochdale game, especially considering that without him the team went on to win 7 of their next 8 games.

..........for us to have a world class back line for the next few years.

I remember thinking that Southgate and Ehiogu were past it when they went from Villa to Boro... they then had many, many years of fine play between them.
I agree it is worth spending big to keep that back 3 together now, big big, proper big, proper nawty big.
Because we are playing 5 games away from home and moving stadium so will be struggling after 10 games compared to the #SkyBig5ive
Because it keeps Dier in the midfield and saves us buying a midfielder and defender, or something.

[@HLNSport] now understands Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Toby Alderweireld could decide to use legality a issue in his current Spurs contract to force a transfer away from the club before the closing of the summer window.

This time last year I would have been crest fallen at the thought of him leaving, now a part of me thinks the sooner he goes the better so we can all move on.
