Hopefully he’s playing rope-a-dope and we’ll come out all guns blazing after the break…
He deserves credit for changing things and getting a much better performance out of the team in the second half.
Also deserves sympathy because the injury situation is almost getting to the point that it was last season. We’ve been able to rotate a little bit more but it’s getting pretty bleak, and at least we didn’t lose today.
It wasn’t perfect, but I think this is the first time we can see that the changes he made had real tangible impact in improving the performance.
we were helped because man u went down to 10 men
His partnership with Ven de Ven is incredible...I look back and we've had a few really excellent CB pairings. This might well be the best of them. I think they're better than Verts & Toby (it's a tough one but their creativity is insane for CBs)...

To be fair I’d take results with it being boring all day long. There is a school of thought that I enjoy which involves suffocating the opposition and hitting them when they can’t recover.Johan Cruyff once said "Quality without results is pointless,""Results without quality is boring.",
Frank has got to find some middle ground between the two.

We only conceded 26 goals with Toby and Jan in our peak. Granted we had a better team but I think they were both brilliant footballers and defenders.
They were excellent. I think the current system would test their excellence, but no denying their partnership. I do think context is important with regards to DMs, FBs and the excellent Kane plus Eriksen in his pomp...
Yeah absolutely, we had a much better team around the CB’s including beasts in CM and ferocious athletes in Walker and Rose. I just think Toby and Jan were just solid and sometimes unspectacular. They made fewer mistakes than Romero and VDV who arguably have higher highs, but they’re not as consistent as Toby and Jan.
Worth highlighting again what brilliant footballers the Belgians were too. They set up countless goals with long, direct passes. They also weren’t overly quick so couldn’t rely on pace, they had great positional sense and both read the game.
A really good overview mate, and one for the debate floor. I agree with most of that.
I'd say Toby and Jan were ultimately better defenders and a better CB partnership. Romero and VDV are better footballers...Not sure where I would stand on Jan and Toby vs Romero and VDV.
I think one thing I would say is that Jan and Toby had the benefit of playing in a team that was able to be fully geared to Poch’s vision and got to the peak of its cycle. So the goals conceded is partly down to them but partly down to how well the whole team pressed and controlled the game offensively and defensively.
Would Romero and VDV have worked just as well in the Poch team? I think they would. Would Jan and Toby work just as well in a Frank team? Not sure what hey would. And I think the ability of all 4 in possession is sort of equal.
