The 'what are you reading' Thread

will no doubt get shot down by the literary snobs (if there are any here) But Angels&Demons by Dan Brown would be a good book for a flight - not overly long and is fantastically paced - it is trashy tbf but you'll power through it and should keep you entertained.

failing that, Marching Powder (i forget the author) is a well written bio of an English drug smuggler who get's caught with a large quantity of Cocaine trying to board a plane in Bolivia - and documents his time in what must be the worlds strangest prison - not usually one for these types of prison books but this was a brilliant read.

great read, agreed...

If I could recommend one FANTASTIC, quick and memorable read...JG Ballard's HIGH RISE...it is an absolute BELTER mate...trust me...where are heading to if I might ask?

stopping off at Washington, connection flight to Atlanta (1 week), back to Washington (4 days), then to Virginia (3 days), then to NY (4 days) then hopefully 3 days in Vegas.

are the GoT books any good?

i read some decent books a while back of a similar ilk but i can't for the life of me remember any titles, if i can i'll post em here, i remember really enjoying them but i was younger then and played d&d a lot so my judgement may not have been what it is now

They are very good! they can be a difficult read in places like LotR but I enjoyed them

That's quite an itin...got family in the DC area? NY is superb at this time of year, not too hot, not too cold...hope you catch the clear sky 70 degree no humidity days...not a fan of Vegas though personally! Enjoy your trip mate...

Anyone planning on picking up Morrisseys book this week? I for one can't wait!

Bit boring maybe but "Crimea - The Great Crimean War 1854 - 1856" by Trevor Royle.

Love history and am particularly interested in WW1

I'll probably buy it after christmas, sure to be a good read. That is if he doesn't stop it coming out again (no pun on his ambiguous sexuality intended)

Just started re-reading The Long Walk by 'Richard Bachman' (Stephen King), well worth a read and one of his best in my view.

If you like WW1 can recommend

Forgotten voices of the Somme
And goodbye to all that, two good books.

I'll add those to my Christmas list ahead of the 100 years anniversary of the start next year.

Some other good war time memoirs and accounts from a few conflicts I can recommend

Men of air the doomed youth of bomber command (WW2)

Forgotten voices of D day

Chickenhawk. (Vietnam)
Dispatches. (Vietnam)
Pathfinders first in last out (Vietnam)

With the old breed (Ww2)

Enjoy reading true life story's always think myself lucky that never had to endure the conflict that past generations were involved in.

Armageddon Averted, by Stephen Kotkin. Good book if you're into historical analyses, dry read if you're not. ;)

Has anybody here read Graham Hanc o c k? Fingerprints of the Gods etc. If so, what do you think?
