The 'what are you reading' Thread

I need suggestions people. I'm flying to America on Friday and i want to buy a couple of books for my flight but i'm undecided as to what it is i want. I'm definitely getting 'Blink the power of thinking without thinking' as that's been recommended by a few people but i want a novel too (preferably crime/mystery).

What are people reading?

Saw a culture show special where Jon Ronson interviewed Malcolm Gladwell. Quite an interesting bloke, and the show highlighted a lot of the criticism aimed at his work.

I can't recommend Irvine Welsh highly enough. A few people have found it hard getting round the dialect writing but if you can, it is well worth reading any of his novels.

Try reading 'The Secret History' by Donna Tartt, really well-written psychological thriller.

Thanks for the help guys ... I went with 'and then there were none' by Agatha Christie. I'm gonna get another one tomorrow as I think I will get through this pretty rapidly.

will no doubt get shot down by the literary snobs (if there are any here) But Angels&Demons by Dan Brown would be a good book for a flight - not overly long and is fantastically paced - it is trashy tbf but you'll power through it and should keep you entertained.

failing that, Marching Powder (i forget the author) is a well written bio of an English drug smuggler who get's caught with a large quantity of Cocaine trying to board a plane in Bolivia - and documents his time in what must be the worlds strangest prison - not usually one for these types of prison books but this was a brilliant read.

can anyone recommend me a Game of thrones LotR type novel as I have read those?

Awaits someone saying I should read the Hobbit -.-

"Interesting" original title for that book KD... :-# Was a different time I guess.

I'm reading one of her's at the moment actually, when they announced someone was going to write a new Poirot the other week (a la Ian Flemming/Robert Ludlum etc) I realised I'd never read any of them.

Yeh i know mate...in fact it's been renamed twice hasn't it?

Currently reading through my Jack Reacher (Lee Child) collection, although the Alex Cross (James Patterson) books are a read too.

If I could recommend one FANTASTIC, quick and memorable read...JG Ballard's HIGH RISE...it is an absolute BELTER mate...trust me...where are heading to if I might ask?

are the GoT books any good?

i read some decent books a while back of a similar ilk but i can't for the life of me remember any titles, if i can i'll post em here, i remember really enjoying them but i was younger then and played d&d a lot so my judgement may not have been what it is now

I can recommend Market Forces by Richard Morgan if you're looking for a good and entertaining read. More of a thriller than a crime/mystery book. Futuristic, but nothing science-fictiony in the traditional sense.

Enjoy your trip mate!

Are they still doing the Dragonlance series, have the majority back in UK but found them to be very well written by Weis & Hickman, some of the spin-offs too by Robert Salvatore we a good read as well.
