the Tim Sherwood man love thread

To be fair I think he has a decent enough squad at Villa considering the losses they have had.

Bournemouth first game of the season should be a tough place to go before their confidence is shot...3 points not to be sniffed at...

Tim Sherwood thinks he picks more Englishmen than most, but we've found three others...Tim Sherwood's 2015/16 sound bite catalogue got an early impressive entry after his Aston Villa side ruined Bournemouth's first ever Premier League game with a late Rudy Gestede winner.

"No one has given more opportunities to English players than me," said the manager that has bought five of his nine new recruits this summer from abroad and had six foreign players in his opening-day starting XI at Dean Court.

"I looked around and the English players were far too expensive," the former Spurs man immediately contradicted. "The way the market was, these French boys we brought in were the value for money and had the level of experience playing competitive football in France."

Although Sherwood is far more trusting of English talent than devoted foreign lover Jose Mourinho, his claim that he is the leading light in home-grown nurturing is a little farfetched.

Already after one weekend of the Premier League season three rival managers have shown themselves to be equally willing to hand young English players a chance:

Slaven Bilic – West Ham

The Hammers' trip to Arsenal may have been their first top-flight of the season, but it was their seventh competitive outing of a campaign that started in early July.

In that time, the new manager Bilic has handed a number of chances to the club's youth team – including teenagers Lewis Page and Kyle Knoyle in defence and 20-year-old striker Elliot Lee.

The standout selection, however, was 16-year-old midfielder Reece Oxford's inclusion in the starting XI at the Emirates, where the holding midfielder shone in a surprise 2-0 win.

Mauricio Pochettino – Tottenham

Sherwood may point to his time at White Hart Lane to further emphasise his point, but his successor in the north London dugout has arguably overtaken him in the youth stakes.

Harry Kane and Ryan Mason became first-team regulars for the Lilywhites under Pochettino last season, while it looks like youngsters such as Dele Alli, Tom Carroll and Alex Pritchard will all have numerous chances to impress this term.

Eddie Howe – Bournemouth

Sherwood's post-match claims look all the more outlandish when the starting XI he had just defeated is analysed.

Howe, who has stated he will keep faith with the bulk of the side that won him the Championship last term, fielded eight Englishmen in his side against Villa, with two more named on the bench.

The young tactician has also signed Tyrone Mings and Lee Tomlin during the summer transfer window.

They (Villa) will be lucky to avoid relegation.

They've lost their two best players and won't come close to replacing them. Anything higher than 17th would be a good season.
They're still significantly better than most of the brick at that end of the table.

The PL quality myth is just that - there's very little of any real quality past the top 8 or so teams and really poor teams/managers avoid relegation every year.

I don't agree. They've only avoided relegation because of Benteke, and he's gone now.

That squad is better in just about very position than at least three teams. It's at least as good as (if not better) than just about anything in the bottom half.

What they're missing is a manager who can make them perform to their potential. That squad should not be finishing in the bottom half.

Their squad is as good as the likes of Everton, West Ham, Palace, etc. They just aren't getting to the sum of their parts, let alone past that like those others.

You really are reaching Scara. I get that you don't like the guy and want to make it as difficult as possible to give him credit should he perform well but you're being ridiculous and very transparent. Everton finished 5th two seasons ago, there is no way Villa are even close to them, especially after losing their biggest goal threat.

Just checked Odds Checker, Villa are 5th favourites to go down this season, considering they're a big club compared to the rest of the teams in that bottom half that speaks volumes! Granted it's no guarantee, but the bookies tend to be right more often than not.

Bookies have to include the Captain Bellend factor. We can ignore it because we're talking hypothetically.

Yes but they don't have the same irrational dislike of him that half of GG do and can ascertain that they have an awful squad, hence why they are such a strong favourite to finish in the lower end of the bottom half.

Blaming Villa's hypothetical relegation on their squad ahead of their dingdonghead manager? That's what I'd call irrational! You're already making excuses for Dimmy and he's not even in a relegation scrap yet.. Won't take long mind you.

Have you watched Villa any time in the last 3-4 seasons? It's literally been Benteke and Delph and nothing else. Most of the time in football, it's down to the players rather than the manager. They are brick but it's far easier to claim they are underachieving that way everyone can blame Sherwood when they are relegated. Scara will be saying they should challenge us next.

And btw, I am not even a fan of Sherwood, he is an average manager at best.
