The Stats Thread

Risks, are the players in front making the right runs? number of things you would need to consider

Agree with earlier comments, Perisic was a huge miss, not just for his contributions but for the fact that we wouldn't have had to rely on Deki & Johnson as much when they were in poor form spots.
Room for improvement of course but for me the odd extra cross going astray is preferable to the intermidable sideways passing in front of goal we usually have to endure.

Crossing stats look bad partly due to taking more risks? Begs the question what was Maddison and Porro's crossing like at previous clubs?

FWIW, according to the Premier League site… hopefully we’re able to field a proper CF more frequently next season which should help.

Porro had 32% accuracy from 77 crosses in 2022/23
Porro has 19% accuracy from 197 crosses in 2023/24

Maddison had 28% accuracy from 123 crosses in 2022/23
Maddison has 17% accuracy from 127 crosses in 2023/24

Perisic had 28% accuracy from 123 crosses in 2022/23
Perisic has 23% accuracy from 13 crosses in 2023/24

Excellent work, thanks.

Stats seem to confirm main reasons suspected for drop in accuracy:
- Kane's departure (scored 10 headers in last season with us, a PL record)
- Perisic's long-term injury
- Ange urging more risk taking
- Son not a natural CF; seldom scores headers (about 4%)

So, extrapolating from Porro's stats above, last season he delivered roughly 37 accurate crosses from a total of 197 compared to 25 from just 77 in season 2022/23. Ooer. Well at least in theory it meant he created 12 more goalscoring chances than previously.

It’s not the cross that is always the issue
If your crossing for son you may as well cross for Stephen Hawking

Yeah, as mentioned before, around 4% of his goals were headers. Even that number is a surprise, although he can be quite deft with his nut tbf.

Edit: saying that, low crosses across the face of the goal can often be more deadly, especially for the likes of Son.

Son isn't going to be jumping with a CB trying to win the ball. I'm sure he has even said he doesn't header the ball.

He has always been better when you can get the ball into his feet, it's why he (not just son) struggles against teams who sit back in numbers.

Would be a good option to have someone who is strong in the air, and we can also continue to get the ball wide and hit it low back in

We really missed Perisic. He may not have been a starter, but as an impact sub you can't do better.

I have no clue what this means... can anyone translate?
Does "above 75% of the pitch" mean that we are attacking and are in the 'final quarter' of the pitch i.e. in and around the opposition box? And if so, what does 5% of possession mean... does it mean we have possession for 5% of the game in our opponent's box?

I guessing that it means we have managed to keep the ball and move it over 75% of the pitch won’t losing it, so in the final quarter if the pitch..

It’s why I see Ipswich and Southampton up there too

But I’m probably wrong and it’s another state for the sake of it

And another
I believe ppda is passes per defensive action

Essentially I just check if we’re near MNC LIV ARS in which case we are at the right end of the chart… the. I check where Wet Spam and our rivals are

This is actually a great stat… if we score
Because it highlights we pass more than anyone attack wise, before they can get the ball
But it means feck all without the goals
