A few theories which may or may not be utter garbage:
Traditionally we always play open, attacking football making us defensively more vulnerable. Knowing this our opponents set up to deploy the counter-attack, getting ten or eleven men behind the ball making it more difficult for us to find a way through, thus obliging us to shoot from range
Over the years we've had a succession of attacking forwards who specialise in long range strikes - Berbatov, Keane, Pavlyuchenko, Defoe, Bale, Siggy, Townsend (ahem), Kane, Eriksen.
It's a good while since we've had a predator like Lineker who specialises in snaffling chances inside the box
