The overrated films thread

Being a total Tolkien 'geek' I was over the moon when the films came out, and would gush about them constantly. However, having watched them a couple more times since, I don't rate them as highly as I did.

There are still some absolutely stupendous moments of cinematography, and moments that make me get goosebumps. However, the needless deviation from the books along with some woeful acting (Elijah Woods and Orlando Bloom I'm looking at you) have certainly lowered it's appeal for me.

I think the problem with fantasy stories that get made into movies is that, in LOTR case anyway, people know the story so well they have already got in their head what the characters are like etc and for some the Jackson vision isn't shared. I'm with Mullet, some of the cinematography is stunning as well as the effects but the acting is pretty meh.

Inglorious Basterds - first 10 mins I thoughts fudge me this is going to be great! Oh how wrong was I.

Clerks 2 - Expected it to be brick even with the over hype and was not disappointed. Although Jay doing Buffalo Bill had me in tears tbf.

was gonna say Blade Runner, but i watched it again last night and thought it was pretty good - seemed to try and make itself needlessly hard to follow though

Porn is up there.

No seriously look I loved Stupid Crazy Love (watched it last week), I loved Cool Runnings (top three movies - should have won an oscar) BUT my two fave movies are Good will hunting and Sleepers.

There are plenty of other movies I love I just hate sci fi and fantasy movies. I also hate those 'gangster/mafia' style movies like Godfather or Goodfellas - all that happens is people die, people get killed, drugs etc etc etc I love scarface tho

Post of the year nominee already for me, haven't laughed like this in years. :D

Top of my head: (And I don't care, some of the other movies being touted here has made me genuinely upset, but also alot of good suggestions)

Braveheart - Mel Gibson is such a douchebag, some good action scenes but that's about it.

The Dark Knight - I love this movie, and it is very good indeed, but how this is rated as almost one of the best movies of all time is beyond me.

Donnie Darko - I don't know, people seem to love this movie, but it just didn't do anything for me. Long time since I've seen it now though, maybe I'll change my mind when/if seeing it again.

Haven't seen Waterworld in ages, they're pretty even to me in standard, but Braveheart is way more overrated than Waterworld, at least a lot of people actually acknowledges that Waterworld is brick.

I don't agree with all the people saying the Sixth Sense. If anything, I think you get rewarded with repeat viewings for obvious reasons, I won't ruin the ending for people who haven't seen it.

Wouldn't worry bout spoiling it... probably the film most "spoiled" ever. Pretty sure everyone who's heard of it knows how it ends whether they seen it or not

For me it's have to be the following (that I can think of, although there's probably more)

Shawshank Redemption - Good film, but far far too overrated... IMDb's top rated movie of all time with a score of 9.2!?!?! It weren't that good!

Fight Club - Dunno, just not for me really

Apocolypse Now - Love war films but this one fore me just dragged

Gran Turino - took me 4 attempts to watch it from start to finish coz I kept falling asleep

Slumdog Millionaire - Never watched it never will... Not my type of film at all, and if anything, the ridiculous amount of hype it recieved puts me off more

Braveheart - Stupid accent, most of his films annoy me now. I did like alot of Mel's flicks but now... he just annoys me!

Dark Knight - Good film again, but overrated off the back of the Heath Ledger fiasco! Yes it was a great performance but probably lorded more because of his death afterwards. Plus despite the cheesyness of them, I still prefer the first 2 Batman films

All Harry Potter films - Just not for me... Don't get the hype surrounding the franchise at all??

Completely agree with the bolded.

I think there is a lot of hype around Blade Runner the film, rather than ABOUT Blade Runner the film.

The whole battle between Ridley Scott and the studio, the re-cuts and edits, the midleading marketing...

I think its a quality film and deservedly highly regarded, but also that it can be percieved as over rated by virtue of the sheer amount of noise surrounding it. Most of which is about the making of and subsequent wrangles as opposed to the film itself.

I thought the same. Had absolutely no interest in it, but was persuaded by the wife to watch it and I actually really enjoyed it. I think the story drew me in more than I anticipated, and the film was nothing like I thought it would be. I'd recommend giving it a go.

Oh I have a corker for this thread...Sideways, or Arseways as i like to call it...that horrific fudging thing about wine weirdos. Load of gonads.

I can't summon up enough interest to watch Withnail and I - a film lauded for years as being absolutely wonderful.

I have tried my damndest, but I find the characters so revoltingly unwatchable I can't watch for any length of time.

Its supposed to be some kind of masterpiece

Watched withnail & I the other day, but probably didn't give it the attention it deserves so will watch again soon.

Thought the Departed was awesome though.

A film I thought was massively over-rated was The Hurt Locker, not really oscar worthy in my opinion. Filled with plot holes cliches and had no real message for me.

I watched the departed on DVD one night by myself and felt compelled to applaud at the end. I loved it.
