That's the point. He has always had the ability, but has never performed on the big stage. He may have had the leading jump this year as well. He was considered a medal prospect, but few had him down for gold. So I think it fair to say the crowd lifted him to the performance.
 
Percy and Simpson lose gold in the last 100m's of the race, gutted for them both, Silver though but the Swede's did them

A nervous moment when the Dutch sailor looked like getting second on the day and grabbing gold, a bit like the way Percy & Simpson lost out by focusing on the top two battle.
