Stats say otherwise. Villa should be around 14th based on their underlying metrics. They've been incredibly lucky.
That may be so but to claim Emery isn't a solid manager (he's actually a very good one) is crazy.

He took Villa from a relegation fight to the Champions League. That wasn't a one off, they competed for CL last season too and this season they are competing for the title (albeit I expect them to fall away a bit). He's won 4 Europa Leagues and then a bunch of trophies with Paris (albeit there is context there).

I get the point on the underlying numbers but results speak louder and he's been getting results for over two years at this point. That's not luck.

Emery is a really good manager for sure. In terms of the underlying numbers the point of them is that it's more telling over the longer term - by the end of the season it's likely Villa would have slipped a way down the table unless that improves somewhat. Like how our underlying figures being in the bottom quarter of the league caught up with us and we've been slipping down the table since a decent start. It's not the be all and end all for sure, but can be a warning sign of an impending drop off....

Very impressive that (after taking over from Slippy G) Villa have accumulated the 4th highest points tally in PL since Emery took charge of them, all the while he’s had to cope with the demands of 3 successive seasons in European competitions plus having to sell players in order to meet FSR meaning he’s had a net spend of €10m.

In the same period our nett spend is close to half a €billion and yet our points tally is closer to that of Wolves than Villa!

Team news - Timber starts and Havertz on bench for Arsenal, five changes for Villa

Arsenal v Aston Villa (20:15 GMT)

Arsenal starting XI: Raya, Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Hincapie, Zubimendi, Merino, Odegaard, Trossard, Saka, Gyokeres

Subs: Arrizabalaga, Lewis-Skelly, Norgaard, Madueke, Havertz, Eze, Martinelli, Jesus, White

The way Villa keep missing chances this is looking like one of those games where the goons score in injury time to win it, the ref will probably nod one in for them or something.
