I think there's been lot of noise, maybe too much, about Chadli and Capoue this window for various reasons. I think they were squad purchases, and the excessive focus on them has drawn the eye away somewhat from our our 4 big signings:

- Lamela
- Soldado
- Paulinho
- Eriksen

That's where the serious money went. We now have 5 or 6 or maybe even 7 world class or near/potential world class players in the spine:

Lloris > Verts > Paulinho/Sandro > Lamela/Eriksen > Soldado.

Their spine, with at least 2 spots significantly below "world class" level:

Chesney > Mertsack > Ramsay/Wiltshire > Ozil/Cazorla > Giroud.

Their first team is the bollox, there's no point in denying it. But those spines are where the meat of the season will be decided and I think ours is just as likely to come out on top.
 
Why are people so upset about this. **** what they do - they are allowed to buy you know - to tell a club not to sell anyone is a bit of a ****ty thing to do and its like having no confidence that despite spending 100m (net spend nil) you wont get into CL.

If we dont get into CL its because we werent good enough and thats down to players and manager.
 
First off Ozil is a great buy for any club at any time so fair play for that even if it is that lot down the road..

However, Wenger has gone on about how difficult it is to improve on the good players they already have which is a fair point. Ozil cost a lot and will be an improvement on any one of the players he replaces whether it is Ramsey, Arteta or even Wheelchair.. But what I don't get is how it would surely have been much easier to replace the Goalkeeper with a world class one (a few options out there), a left back that isn't injury prone, a centre back (wouldn't have cost a lot), a real decent defensive midfielder rather than backup Flamini or a world-class forward (they were in for Higuaín who would have been first choice in front of Giroud) or even a back up forward if Giroud is now deemed good enough... Still a lot of questions left unanswered.. The one position they probably didn't need was a more creativity.
 
It's purely psychological. People here are upset because it came at the last minute when our business was done.

Imagine if Arsenal had signed Ozil months ago, perhaps shortly after Gazidis's £75m war chest quote. Then they did absolutely nothing else all summer as we signed Soldado, Paulinho, Capoue. Deadline day comes and out of no where we sign Eriksen and Lamela at 10.55pm.... we'd all be spunking blood on this forum.

It's the fairly arbitrary timing which results pessimism or optimism. The outcome is exactly the same.

Couldn't agree more, I know he's a good player, but they haven't just signed Messi/Ronaldo/that other bloke.

They have failed to address the problem areas of their team, watch what happens, the season is long, and I believe we still have the better squad and will finish 5-8 points above them.

Very true... They were always going to pull something out of the hat.. How many times have we moaned that we leave it late to try and get players in.. This is the other side of the coin, guess it shows you have to be careful what you wish for..

Yet one player and one that better teams didnt but. He is quality and arguably the best attacking midfielder in the league but he could get injured in international duty this week and then what?

I know what we played like without certain key players and it wasn't great

Good luck to them. They have done a £70M deal (including wages) but its only one player and not in an area if weakness for them
 
No CL; we would have had no chance of getting Ozil anyway.

Oh and 45M you could almost have bought Cavani or Falcao.
Good player but massive price for a player who is often spoken of as going missing in the 'big games'.

Anything above 25M would have been a major risk for us. Plus the wages...
 
good one for arsenal to pull off - that ozil is truly a wonderful player, and will love to see him in the epl
its going to be a race to the finish for fourth again

Exactly, I think we have changed in one world class player for three (Lamela, Soldado and Eriksen), two very good (Paulinho and Capoue) and two with potential that I haven't seen enough of pre Spurs to have any real expectations (Chadli and Chiriches). I certainly wouldn't call them average..

Great player, odd signing given what they needed. I'd have been much more worried had man U signed Ozil and the filth Fellani or Suarez. Ozil is a wonderful player, but he is a player who 3 days ago was clear that he did not want to leave Madrid, and has thus ended up at the goons because he's been forced out and his other option was PSG!
How will they accommodate Cazorla, Ozil, Wheelchair, Arteta, Walcott?

I think it's interesting that Ericsson's assist stats are also very high, but obviously in the Dutch league. But equally, there's been no Ronaldo or Khedira or Alonso in there helping. Time will tell...this is all about timing. Remember, they spent half the match Sunday with 10 men behind the ball looking like Wigan at the Lane...

i think otherwise - that he was forced out by ancelotti and didn't have any options, considering the coming world cup. his only assurance would be to start when fit.

the gauntlet has been laid, no doubt - for if arsenal don't make CL next year, Ozil might agitate for a move.
 
Gooners taking the **** out of Man Utd. You only made one decent signing yourself though.

Man Utd's quest for a central midfielders

- Kevin Strootman, interest. Player moved to Roma upon hearing about their plans to move forward.
- Thiago Alcantara- interest. Player moved to Bayern to once again have the chance to once again work under Pep.
- Cesc Fabregas, bids rejected. Player stated exclusively he does not wish to leave Barcelona.
- Luka Modric, interest. Real Madrid stated player was not for sale.
- Mesut Özil, interest. Real Madrid initially stated player was not for sale. When Özil had a bid for his services accepted, Man Utd enquired and were informed of the players' desire to join Arsenal.
- Daniele De Rossi, bid rejected. Roma had/have no plans to sell their captain.
- Ander Herrera, bid rejected. Player would not leave unless release clause was met. Man Utd attempted to meet release clause but negotiations were too complex which lead to a breakdown of the transfer.
- Marouane Fellaini, signed. Player signed on deadline day after bid of £25.7M was accepted.

No matter what fans may say this is NOT a good transfer window for Man Utd. Fellaini will soften the blow but he's not the midfielder they were looking for and he was paid for £3M more than he would have been in June, when his release clause existed. Man Utd also had two bids rejected for Leighton Baines.

If Ozil now gets injured, their entire transfer window has been nobbled. Equally if Chesney or Giroud snap a cruciate.

Whereas if we lose a big player, our window's activity has given us increased quality & cover (though not total)
