The Game Is About Glory Podcast

Doubting Thomas
Season 6 Episode 23

Steff, Milo and Gareth are your therapists helping guide us all through the choppy waters which saw a home defeat to Fulham and a CL away defeat to PSG. You actually get a little over the usual ‘hour’ AND we don’t charge, so settle back on the couch, clear your mind, and engage with the assistance being offered (hope it helps!)…

I listen to the pod on my commute of a Monday, always gives me a reason to get up on a Monday.
Only about 20 minutes in atm, so the comments about the players don't know what to do, the instructions aren't clear, they're confused.
how many times have we heard this, it's the same with every manager, are the players dumb?
We've went from all out attack last season, which confused them apparently, to "solidity" this season and they don't understand that either.
Are they goldilocks?

I think if you have spent two seasons aligning the club to a style of play -or at least an ethos of front-foot play- then to flip the tables so as suddenly they are now being set-up not to concede first and foremost and coached to create chances in a different way to before, then no, they're not 'dumb' we just keep flipping managerial styles all the time and players get thrown around within that. Whether we think that's right or wrong in terms of principles, I think it is a fact. Have we made successive appts of managers who carry the same ethos and way of playing football in the last 25 years? I genuinely don't think so.

One thing I don't they were last season was confused. I appreciate there are many differing views on what we were doing, and that (leaving the reasons why out of it) things did not seem to be working. But I never once got the impression the players were confused.

We certainly have not carried an ethos, a movie to represent this club would be the three faces of eve.
I don't really think the players are dumb, or the manager for that matter, but we always appear to have a lot square pegs for round holes, and few are suitable for having the edges shaved off to fit.
It was postulated a fair bit last season that the players looked lost, they didn't trust or understand the system, this feels like a stock bat to batter any manager now.
Personally for me it's that players are being trained as robots, anything outside of the prediction of how the game will be played and they are lost.
The system has become king, as soon as someone does something outside the system it all falls down like a pack of cards.

It certainly does open up a whole discussion about how the beauty and nature of football as it once was has been steadily co-opted by business needs and science.
I wonder if the likes of George Best or Diego Maradona would've made it in modern football such was their maverick talent?
Hoddle was possibly one of the very first players I saw suffer in that regard, England never being able to accomodate his talent in lieu of compromising their 'system'.

Too many managers try to tweak the players to get them into the system, whereas I think you should be tweaking the system to get the most from the players.
Tell best or Maradona not to express themselves and play within the system and you're at best playing with half a player.
I shudder to think of hoddle playing under our current system , I have visions of him being told to pass it 20 yards to Porro on the right to swing in a cross, what a waste.

...or worse still, being restricted to cameos when we're chasing games...

...aside from the description, we do also discuss whether James Maddison is the new Wes Anderson! We chat about his rehab films, and ponder whether he is heading for some sort of career in cinema verite/dogme95!!!

Is it too early for new year resolutions?

I think mine would be to start listening to this pod after it is released. I had to binge listen to 3 last week in one sitting

Genuinely, keep up the great work guys.

Gray Day
Season 6 Episode 27

Steff, Milo, and Ram discuss the fruit of victory at Selhurst Park, ponder the concept of being managed by Syd Barrett, Lemmy, or Burnstein & Mensch, muse over whether we are miserable bastards, discuss the mighty Archie Gray, pontificate on the importance of inches, and find time to compare our current state to literature! Happy Holidays!

Good listen as always.
Just a couple of points, Gareth and the emotional players, during the Sunderland game the coms said that Sunderland players enjoy defending, they defend well as a team.
I don't think our defenders enjoy defending for defendings sake, they defend because they have to, they want to defend to win the ball and progress it forward, Frank is reigning that in, maybe that's the issue, they are not being able to express their natural behaviour leading to frustrations.
With exception of danso our defence looks to play forward, they want to go at teams, it's not a defend, clear, reset, defend, clear, etc squad.

I think it was milo that said Sunderland are "over performing on the stats", well we heard that last year about forest and villa this season, stats mean little, points mean prizes, (what do points mean, prizes 😁), I'd rather have terrible stats and finish top four (very possible with villa) than great stats and finish mid table.

I think that is very much the case, mate, yes.
Romero and VdV are superb defenders in an attacking system where they play 10 yards higher, it makes the most of their skillsets and vision/drive.
We saw yesterday that Bentancur can be progressive as we remember, yet he was essentially put back in his box second-half. When Palhinha came on, I hoped we’d release Bentancur to play as a free 8 and use Joao to enforce in front of the defence. Instead, he did what he always does in these situations and regressed to safety-first. I firmly, firmly believe that if he’d have released Bentancur to do thsat, we’d have created the game winning chance.

i was at the game, i thought we looked good, on the front foot, but we lacked a clinical finish or a way to cut open the oppo. Sunderland defend well and deep

Late in the second half, sunderland made a double sub, went wide and started to pressure us and not long after got the equalizer

Shame Paulinha didn't get his header on target late on

we just don't have a world class finisher, best we have we hardly played and just sold, so there we go - TF and the board need time to build the side they want
