* The 'Buying a Tablet or Netbook' Thread *

I've heard they are quite decent but its basically a web browser (or was) so if you don't have the net where you are then you're pretty much fudged as everything is cloud based.

Most apps work offline in a limited sense, it's no mac/ultra book but for the price you get a decent enough machine which runs a great browser. I installed the chrome os on an old laptop a fre years ago and it's really come along since then, if the laptop wasn't so very, very slow I'd be able to use it for most of my browsing.

Most reviews have been very complimentary, best advice I've read is 'try using no other program but chrome and its apps for 24 hours, if you manage it then a chrome book is perfect for you'

Sounds absolutely awful if you ask me.

Wow you can edit emails in offline mode, hardly revolutionary.

System can't even play a divx video.

its a solution in need of a problem if you ask me

i'm sure some companies may find that kind of thing useful from a security point of view but i doubt they will sell many in the CE space

Like that review says, it depends on how you use a laptop. If you have a limited budget and want a pc with good battery life that boots up in seconds and which you don't need to worry about updates for then it's got to be useful at that price.

I was thinking of getting one for my girlfriend as all she uses the pc for is chrome (and largely Google at that) music and the odd very basic excel sheet. The simplicity and speed of chrome os make it pretty appealing for that, particularly as I'm bound to spend less time sorting out spyware/system problems than I did with her old, now dead, laptop.

Personally id need something more powerful but it's a secondary machine and a laptop for a couple hundred quid makes more sense than a compatible windows one for 500 which will probably grind to a halt as soon as anything is installed on it.

The school sector seems to be adopting them very fast in the us, where the price and security make them perfect and tech journalists tend to be fairly positive about them for productivity so I imagine journalists would find them handy too.

i just want something to download and link up to tv. I have a mac currently I also have a laptop pc (work one but can use it for personal use). The mac seems on its last legs (have had it for four years) so just wanted something basis to download movies etc and browse the net for porn and chat to you fudgers.

i dont really use a laptop for anything else really.

There's a torrent client for chrome, so with an external drive you can save videos, and it has an hdmi port to show on the tv but it doesn't have the greatest support for video codecs at the moment. H264 works pretty flawlessly on my netbook, and other formats often found on the Web like mp4 are fine but divx /xvid don't work - not sure if that's a limitation of my old net book and unofficial chrome build or if the new chrome books have the same issue.

Might be an app released soon to change that mind, it's a growing os so limitations like that area likely to be sorted by someone.

Best thing to do is install the chrome browser on your laptop and try to get through a few days using nothing but that. The chrome store should have options for most things.

Anyone who bought a Nexus 7 recently, Asus / Google are offering a £25 refund if you bought it before the price drop.

So, want to get the missus a tablet for Xmas. Firstly, started off with Kindle Fire HD - but its way too Amazon-centric. Heard the scrolling isn't too great either.

Nexus 7 and Samsung Galaxy 10 are the two others. Obviously, differing in size if I want to pay the extra for the Galaxy.

I guess this is almost a lap top replacement for her with the added bonus of doing a little more on it. So basically, book reading, shopping online, facebook, music, movies etc etc.

I think she thinks she's getting a Fire because they advertise it to fudge. Just not sure if the Fire is simply too restricted compared to the other two.

Droids, your assistance please.

x

Also - if you share 'best deals' for the Nexus 7 and the Galaxy 10, would be muchly appreciated.

I wouldn't go with the kindle. I'm not sure the kindle can even download from google play? are you restricted to only using the amazon app store?

With the samsung or nexus you can download books/apps from amazon *or* google play (or anywhere else you like for that matter)

Has the missus got an android phone already? If you purchase an App on Google Play for your phone you can use that app on any android device you link with your account - providing it's compatible.

If you already have an app on your phone that you've paid for, if you get a Kindle and want to install that same app on your Kindle you will have to purchase the app again from Amazon.

So it comes down to size. If it's primarily for reading 'paperbacks' I'd go with the nexus. Though a bigger screen is probably better for films and magazines and stuff.

P.S. I have a nexus 7 and I have several books from Google Play as well as having several books from Kindle. I'll buy my e-book from whichever service is selling that book cheapest.

Just bought the Acer netbook for the gf for her college work. $199. Does everything that she's going to need. Even has 320gb hard drive so she doesn't have to store everything on the net. Neither of us are particularly "techie" so didn't see the point in spending the extra cash on a bunch of options that we'll never use.

I'll report back after she's been using it for a while....

I recently purchased the nexus 7 32gb and must say I'm really pleased with it. I was always sceptical about the size but when you have it in your hand I'm glad and went for the 7 inches. For browsing and reading u would say it's perfect size. I got it from very.co.uk they did have 10% off first order or £20 off for existing customers. So paid £180.
You can set different user profiles on it so me and my wife don't have to log out of Facebook etc as just switch profile.

Nexus 4 announced too. No LTE but again, excellent pricing

Had the nexus 4 for a week now and it's easily the best phone I've used. As smooth and as polished as the ip5 and an amazing screen - as good as the htc one x. The speed and multi tasking blows anything else out the water (ip5 browser might have the edge on chrome but it's minimal). Camera isn't quite as good as the iPhone or sgs3 and music quality isn't as good as the iPhone but for £270 it's unreal.

Only downside is the battery absolutely sucks :-( it's about as good as my s2 was but without the ability to swap out batteries that's just not good enough for me, sadly. Even the lack of storage isn't a huge deal as I tend to keep the big aaa games for my tablet and stream music from Google play/spotify.

Have ordered the Nexus 4

Have got in the habit of putting my devices in flight mode, when I don't really need internet (e.g. commuting, in meetings, overnight)

It's all about Green Power, it's an app that will turn off data/wifi automatically. On my phone 3g is turned on for 5 mins every half hour or if the phone is unlocked. Brilliant app.
