I'll take gritty performances and 3 points any day over what we went through back then.
Couldn't agree more. I think the year we played in the Champions League we played the most attractive football we've played for a long time. Credit to Redknapp where it's due.
However, I think we currently have the best team we've had - maybe my whole life. Sure we had a handful of truly amazing players in the late 70s / early 80s but overall our squad was inferior. Today though, we are looking like a real force in English - and European football. Assuming AVB can get the best out of these players, and I'm optimistic that he can, I think we'll end up playing football that's almost as attractive as Redknapp had us playing, while simultaneously getting better results.
We have real steel in the team now; and if we bring in a creative attacking player or two (as seems to be strongly hinted) we'll have some silk in there with the steel. We'll be able to dig deep and grind out victories against defensive teams, while opening up and playing skillful, easy-on-the-eyes, football against more free-flowing teams.
Levy has made mistakes during his tenure (even his biggest fans must acknowledge that the Berbatov / Frasier Campbell debacle was a slip-up. But when you compare us now to where we were when Levy first arrived? In my view he's been the best chairman in the premier league.
