I would have been sorry to have missed the Charlatans. They were one of my favourite bands of the period and it was a pivotal gig in their history.

We also got John Squire joining Oasis on stage on the Sunday, even if it was for the brick awful Champagne Supernova.

the charlatans never did it for me

If I could be bothered I'd go and dig out the GTFO picture I posted the other day. With a comment like that I don't think you even deserve the effort. ;)

I got into them when they were baggy also-rans and never really lost the love
I was never quite sure why they were also-rans, one of my favourite bands of the time - especially with the sound of Rob Collins.

They went to brick when Burgess fudged off to the US and got into country music though.

I like Burgess' description of them in the early 90's as being the Byrds to the Roses' Dylan. A nice touch of self-depreciation.

I like their country/Curtis Mayfield influenced albums. I'd have Wonderland down as their most complete work.

I like Metallica more than I like Oasis. But I like the first 4 albums by Metallica the most (And Justice For All is my favourite -- no, I don't care about the bass issues!)

The Black Album has some good songs on it, but for me, it's not an album that represents Metallica in the way the first 4 albums do. I think the perfect fusion of metal and mainstream was achieved in the song 'One' that was on the previous album (And Justice For All).

IMO, Definitely Maybe is the best Oasis album and showcases what they were about and the music that helped defined the time. So Oasis get my vote here.

Definitely Maybe, definitely. This thread got me looking through my music collection and I suddenly realised that I do not own a single piece of American music.

I avoided voting for many reasons. Perhaps the biggest is that I think both are tremendous. HAD I voted, I would have to have given it to The Black Album, simply because the impact it has had still resonates via the band themselves today (who only last weekend closed a 50,000+ gig in the midwest with "...Sandman"). In fact, it's resonance and influence has always been greater than Definitely Maybe...not to say that isn't a tremendous album, it is!
