Taking stock for 5pm...

I also think we might have speculated on some talent/potential if we had room in the squad, but being unable to shift unwanted/extra players killed that off.

I don’t think we have a small array of players out there to suit our needs, there are plenty of players that could improve us. I think it’s that Levy simply won’t overpay for a player which in itself limits the players we can get. We c ould of easily shifted unwanted players if we had wanted after we had signed a player, but again we might of had to take a bit of a hit in terms of fees received. The quality of player we are looking for at market value (or better) is tougher to find and Levy might have to accept at this end of the market you are going to have to spend big at some point....
 
Cost is just another metric, it’s as important as how fast or smart a player is, how susceptible to injury they are, no more or less.

Saying, this player would improve us but Levy won’t pay the fee is the same as saying that player would improve us but Poch won’t play the system he works in, or that the medical staff won’t be able to keep him fit.

It has to be the full package.

Maybe. But it's probably not as easy as you think for us to get a player that can automatically improve our first XI. Obviously, players like Mo Salah would improve it, but we're not going to get them. So, you need a player who is going to come in and do a better job than Son, but who is more gettable than Salah. (I'm just using Son's position as an example). When it's put like that, there aren't many players jumping out as a "must" purchase. Players like Zaha cost £70m with no guarantee of being any better than what we have.

So, with the first XI being difficult to improve, we could say that we should look to improve on squad players (easy to find better than Sissoko, for example). But even then, the players we target for squad roles have to be happy coming here and not being certain of a place in the team. That takes many good players out of the equation. So we might go for a younger player from a lesser team (like Grealish from Villa) but then there comes a point where the asking price is too much for these players, which shrinks the pool of players worth buying.

I wasn’t just talking about the first team, but at the same time I don’t think our first team can’t be upgraded in CM. I don’t think Dier is all that,and Dembele is on his last legs. I also never said it’s easy hence why you’ll find i haven’t kicked up a fuss. It’s just an observation but as a chairman that has paid himself more than any other (I’m sure that I’ve heard that somewhere but correct me if I’m wrong) you’d expect him to come up with solutions to difficult tasks. Anyway, I’m relaxed with it all....

It seems to me at the time and still now, that no player was available that would improve us for less than an extortionate price. Grealish quoted at 45, Zaha 70, Richarlison 50...

Nothing’s changed in the past week other than the fact a contractor fudged up the security systems in the stadium. Damn you Levy!!!

That is a fair assessment; i disagree (i doubt Pochettino thought after 3 successive CL place finishes all we'd do is sign no-one) but at least we sold no-one (so far...)

Again on the surface that is fair...but we have heard the same reasons for why we don't push on before. You might indeed say those are crazy prices for those players, but are they any crazier than 30M for Sissoko? Did anybody think Sanchez (as great as he seems and as high a potential that he seems to have) was a bargain at 45m? We always seem to not quite 'make a go and push on' when we get the chance (how many summers do we have our fiercest local rivals on and off the pitch be in such disarray?)

I honestly think the problems with the stadium have caused us to not make one signing (which if we are being honest was needed based on our form/play near the end of the season). In fact, for me, it would be giving Levy the big benefit of the doubt if it is indeed the stadium issues (i'd hate it to be any of the other issues i brought up...:eek:)

...Or after many years of watching Spurs and how they operate under Levy for many years. It's not as if i'm constantly moaning about Levy either. However, i always read you posting about "how much flak Levy gets" even when it seems to be reasoned and well thought out.
Can i simply ask you: is Levy EVER to blame for ANYTHING that has happened with Spurs in his time as Chairman in your view?

Of course he has made mistakes ( everyone does) but your bit in bold is a telling point. And in no way is what you said earlier in the thread is anyway "reasoned and well thought out."

ie you said this "The window in the end was a complete shambles if we're honest". Now no one ( imo) can call that a "reasoned and well thought out." statement.
