Southern Rail

They're clams. The fudging lot of them, they're all clams. (The conductors that is)

I've been stuck in Chichester a few times lately when I've left my car somewhere and thought I'd collect it the following day. Fortunately those occasions have been few and far between for me, but my wife doesn't drive and getting around has been tough.

This is something Southern have to win. If they lost here it could consign us all to rail unions getting above their stations (no pun intended).
 
Yeh I feel the same mate, I hate anyone having a bad time in work but this is taking the biscuit. The strikes I can handle, its the sickness sabotage I can't, calling in sick to push normal days into the ground.

I know people who have problems at work and at home now because of this, its beyond a joke

80% of the conductors voted to accept the new conditions but the unions are still insisting on strikes, they are aiming them to cause most disruption so doing it in the middle of the week, I am going to the CSKA Moscow game at Wembley but not sure how I am getting back as the are no trains running that day.

Ronnie Reagan sacked all the Air Traffic Controllers .... soon things settled down and probs since few & far between.

This is seen as a last Hurrah for the Rail Unions.

Not that I have suffered much, but this needs sorting.

It was in the Argus the other day, the Argus has stayed neutral due to not really knowing what its readership thinks, so for them to report that I assume they had got it from Southern official sources.

Even on days the are strikes, trains still run so obviously the are a few conductors who would rather earn money like normal people. I am not risking it for the spurs game so will be staying up in London at one of the grange groups hotels as I still have some vouchers for them.

I have hated Southern Rail since I moved to Chichester, absolutely useless and their crappy trains implemented 6 years ago from the Soviet era which was heralded as, wait for it.....INVESTMENT!!!! YAY!!!!

And their c@nty 'guards' who earn enough to strike all the f@cling time, who, since those posters of guards with blacks eyes went up, run their mouths and give it the grin and the f@cling big'un, die , fudging die!

Had to get off at West Worthing a few weeks back and ask for a lift to Chichester from my brother as their was no rail replacement and it was 6:30pm!

Every train has 8 or more coaches instead of the udual 4 because of this sh!t. Trains pulls up at uni, 'due to a short platform, please go to the front sh!tty four coaches' just as the train has stopped there, got to the right coaxch and it pulls away. Literally didn't inform anyone about before the train left for f@cking anywhere, a few people p!ssed off as well.

Late for first lecture and gonna have to leave early for the last lecture, no trains after 6 again today.

Note to self, buy a f@cking car, sitting in the sh!tty traffic at Arundel and Worthing bottle necks on the A27 is better value for money than this sh!t.

I did think during the rant above that I'm just a student, I work part time but that's via the bus. GHod knows what it's like for you and everyone else who uses these @ssholes everyday.

Unionism is collective action in the workplace to better worker's conditions and pay. It has nothing to do with the socialization of the means of production, distribution and exchange.
 
IMO - This particular dispute is by design with the go ahead by the Government, this is intended to break the Union and remove Guards across the network. If you think this is necessary or not is beside the point its the underhand way it has been carried out. I know some are very pro Shareholder and anti union but regardless of that this dispute was orchestrated from the start.

Look at the contract that Govia has on this line (compared to almost all others) I don't have the details now but it is a management contract rather than a Franchise meaning they are not on the hook in the same way for delays and missed trains.

You may think it is a good thing to smash the union but at least be aware that this is not primarily about changing working practice but an attack on one of the last powerful unions left.

An important aspect in why it has gone so terribly wrong is the unique contract Southern Trains is running under. Most rail franchises keep the revenue from fares, but Govia Thameslink Railway, Southern’s umbrella company, just runs the service and gives revenue directly to the Department for Transport.

This has two important implications. Firstly, this means they don’t get fined when they cancel trains, as other franchises do. It’s the Department of Transport that shoulders the losses. Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas told LBC it was a no-risk contract, meaning "they are making cancellations far more complacently than another company would."

Secondly, rail companies have traditionally avoided confrontation with staff as any strike will hit their profits. But with this special contract, it’s actually the government who loses money, which means Govia have been able to try to instigate ideological working practices without any concern for profits.
