Valid points, but that’s not what this team needs. It needs a leader who can martial them, and that’s not Sonny or Ange so why make him captain?

Agree but I think the fact he is so well liked is one of the main reasons he shouldn't be captain, he's just too nice and 'matey'. What great captains can you think of who all the teammates spent half the time hugging so much? He's just not captain material, the whole leadership group selection was just wrong....

I’m not sure the options were that great at the time - based on who Ange had decided he wanted to stay vs ship out. Unfortunately there’s still not anyone I’d think of straightaway as captain material right now. Deki maybe but that’s due to his effort and work rate. Vicario perhaps but the GK as captain is not ideal. We still lack that leader figure.

What people perhaps forget that if Son wasn't captain we'd still have Son's amazing personality around the place. He'd still be a mentor to the younger players and he'd still be the approachable guy in the leadership group. I'm sure behind every Keane there was a Giggs.
My 2 favourite England captains have been Becks and Hendo. They seem to draw from both characteristic sets to lead. Both could pick their teams up and say / do the right things. Both could be spiky and both could be cuddly. Sonny just doesn't have that diversity.
Yes to me there are two types of great captain, those with a great mentality/fight/never say die attitude who demands the same from the players around him and those who drag their team up through their performance on the pitch. Son doesnt have these capabilities, and you are right he doesn't need the armband to do what he does with the squad - he was exactly the same before he was captain.
If, and I know it's a very big if right now Ange was here next season I'd be interested to see if he kept Son as captain. I don't think he will feature as much next season, but would be a big thing for Ange to strip him of captaincy. If a new manager comes in, it would be much easier to nominate someone other than Son....
